  MY UNCLE FRANK WAS ON GENERAL MACARTHURS STAFF FOR YEARS. HE WAS HIS PHOTOGRAPHER TOOK THE PICTURES OF THE JAPANESE SURRENDER ON BOARD THE USS MISSOURI. SERVED ON STAFF DURING THE JAPANESE OCCUPATION. SERVED ALONGSIDE MACARTHUR DURING THE KOREAN WAR. WHEN MACARTHUR WAS FIRED, HAD THAT MASSIVE PARADE IN NEW YORK CITY. THAT EVENING,  MY AUNT AND UNCLE FRANK WERE DINNER GUESTS OF THE MACARTHURS IN THEIR HOTEL SUITE. THEN UNCLE FRANK WENT TO WORK FOR GENERAL MARSHALL. HE WAS THE ONE WHO TOOK THE PICTURES OF AMERICAS NUCLEAR TESTING DOMESTICALLY,  AND JOHNSON ISLAND.

  Marshall and Eisenhower were both cool calculators. Halsey and McArthur were more emotional. When faced with a multiple front war in the Pacific and Europe, the cool calculators figured the logistics of victory. The firebrands could be useful at the tactical level but the calculators must rule strategy.

  I can't imagine the strain Marshall was under during the entirety of WW2? He had to manage the friction between Eisenhower, Bradley and Patton vs Montgomery; the friction between MacArthur vs the USN; all of which occurred under the umbrella of friction between Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin, de Gaulle, Chang and Mao...AND THOSE WERE ALL 'ALLIES'!!! Then after all that drama he still had the fortitude to draft and implement The Marshall Plan. Every capital city in EVERY nation that participated in WW2 should have a large and very conspicuous memorial to George Catlett Marshall: Washington DC, London, Paris, Berlin, Moscow, Beijing, Tokyo, Manila, Canberra, etc., etc., etc.

  MacArther considered his proconsulship in Japan far more important than his entire military career. &nbsp;That’s including WW I, WW II and Korea. &nbsp;As an academic specialist in Japanese history and law, he was absolutely correct.

  Leaders are not in the business of being liked. They have a job to do and it’s not a pleasant one. Give these people a break. Mac was far from perfect but his extremely dignified bearing and confident demeanor were needed to instill confidence in the troops. And Mac did a virtuoso job at the surrender ceremony in Tokyo bay. And a great but short oratory worthy of study.

  Maybe possibly do a episode about explaining how the 5th Air Force was able to get dropped tanks made and used on p-47s down in the Pacific Theater that went far enough to go to which would equal to Berlin and back and explain why the bomber Mafia and 844 seem to not give a s*** about supplying long-range bomber until way later and blame it on the P-47
