Simon and Garfunkel's version was a gentle warning.  Disturbed's  version is an angry admonishment for not listening to the previous warning. Both are great in their own way.

Not just a world without music; it's about a world without communication. People talking and shouting at each other without listening, everyone speaking at each other without trying to hear or understand what anyone else is saying.  Basically, what the world has come to with social media, everyone shouting their opinions at each other without ever bothering to stop and listen to what anyone else is trying to say, and without ever letting anyone teach you when you're wrong.   The world was already like that, but it has gotten so much worse with the advent of social media making it so much easier (and even encouraging everyone) to just yell out opinions without putting any thought into them, and then just ignoring anyone who tries to tell you different or tries to inform you when you're wrong or misinformed.  Because social media makes money from people clicking, the best way to get clicks is by making people angry, and the easiest way to make people angry is to encourage them to spout out uninformed, bad opinions, and then yell at each other about it.

This song has always been of Biblical Proportions, Paul Simon's original was trying to wake us up and too many kept sleeping, Disturbed's version, is to shake those that were oblivious to where we are going. I pray this will stir many more to what is so important. Ear to hear, eyes to see and Heart to understand!

The song reaches beyond the perspective of a single narrator, a flash of light revealing a mass of people - humanity all seeking refuge in their own darkness and silence. “This is a song about people's inability to communicate with each other,” Art Garfunkel can be heard perfectly summing up the song in the performance below. Remember back in the 60’s there was so much going on in the world and our young people were protesting the war, seeing JFK and RFK killed, experimenting with drugs, experiencing a new music called rock-n-roll, and didn’t feel like anyone was listening to them I am sure. And now, it is particularly resonating with the multitude of ways we communicate, but we think no one listens. We are bombarded with ads, opinions, commercials, and political commentaries, and yet, we feel our voices are not being heard. Also, some of our newer generations don’t even talk much to each other; they would rather communicate with their Smartphone and other technologies. Add to that the divisiveness of our society in opinions, politics, and beliefs; it seems that this song may apply now more than when it was first written.

👍  Amazing performance!!!      My interpretation is that people hear a warning/truth, but they chose to ignore it to stay in their comfort zone.  The message of this song is just as relevant today as when it was written. 🖖 ❤

Fantastic cover bringing the song into modern times even Paul Simon one of the original singers loved it

Communication, in person, is another message in the song. Simon & Garfunkel warned, Disturbed is pi$$ed that the warning was not heeded!
