Simpson Strong Tie has a great “Wood Construction Connectors” guide that tells you exactly what screws/nails to use with each hanger/bracket.

I cannot count the number of remod jobs, new homes, decks, commercial bldgs I built over decades, but I can tell you this, inspectors tried their best to find violations and after a while they knew they weren't going to find any in my work.  No regrets and have lots of friends still in business - good help is HARD TO FIND but rewarding to those who have a passion.

The hanger that goes over the top of the beam is helpful when there is something in the way of where you'd normally fasten the hanger. For instance, if you are doing flush beam, and a beam-to-post connector happens to end up in the same spot where a joist will be landing, you can butt the joist up against that plate but you can't just ram more fasteners through it.

Added a loft to my garage. Proper fasteners are expensive.  Even so, I wanted it to last and be safe.

That's just the way I did my front porch. I only used screws, though. The building inspector was very pleased! The cost of the screws was worth it to me. I've seen nails pull many times.
