Everyone Gets this ONE Thing Wrong about Concrete Footers (Learn from My Mistake) - DIY Deck Footers

Not because any part of the deck footing construction project is that difficult, but because we had to pour TWENTY-THREE of them.. In this video I will walk you through the entire process for building deck footings, step-by-step! Below is the general Process for Building Deck Footers (sometimes called footings). 1. Determine the location of all of the deck footers. This will be based on your deck layout and local building codes. 2. Determine the diameter of the footers. Again, this is determined by local codes. 12" diameter footings are the most common, and that is what we are using for this project. 3. Dig the footers to the required from depth. In Maryland the frost depth in 30" but it varies depending on where you live and how cold it gets. I like to dig my footers a few inches deeper than the frost depth and than I backfill with a few inches of stone. If you are only digging a few footers, you can dig them by hand using a shovel and a post hole differ. However, if you have many footing, I highly recommend that you rent an auger. Also, be sure to compact the bottom of the footers with a 4"x4" or similar. 4. Cut your concrete form tubes to the required length. Typically, these form tubes come in 4' or 12' lengths and you will need to cut them to size based on your footer depth. We used a circular saw to cut all of our form tubes. 5. Place the form tubes in the hole and ensure that the top is perfectly level. Backfill around the concrete form tube with dirt. 6. Mix up all of your concrete and pour it into the form tubes. 7. Use a concrete finishing trowel to ensure that the top of the concrete is perfectly flat and than insert a concrete anchor bolt into the wet concrete. Ensure that the bolt is positioned exactly where it needs to be (based on your string line layout) and that it is at the right depth. 8. Allow the concrete to cure and then install the post anchor hardware. And if you follow all of these steps you will have a successful deck footer project!
