  As someone who DID NOT heed the advice and get a denimin needle - nothing reminds you of your mortality like a needle snapping whilst moving at high speed and then flying towards you, whilst you sit in the horrified realisation that the stack of heavy duty needles in the craft shop were indeed there for good reason.

  If you're leaving the skirt unhemmed, a little extra is to run a straight stitch round at the level you want it to fray to. Stops it fraying too far in the wash.

  As one who has been sewing for nearly 40 years, I thoroughly enjoyed watching your encouragement to get sewing and wholeheartedly agree that sewing is an essential skill for everyone who wears clothing. &nbsp;❤ on the unpicker, get the best quality, sharpest one you can for the most comfortable and hopefully long lasting experience. I have worn out plenty of unpickers over the years and found that the poorly made (usually cheap plastic) ones tend to get blunt and become harder to use and increase the likelihood of damage to garment and human. These days I like an ergonomic handle too. I began refashioning long before it was a thing and am glad that it is now so popular.

  You need the denim needle because a regular needle either won’t go all the way through the fabric and will be super hard on your motor, or it will just break. I recommend everyone have, in addition to some all purpose needles, some heavy duty needles (for denim, canvas, duck, and upholstery fabric), and some ballpoint needles which are really great for sewing knit fabric. I also recommend for hand sewing and mending purposes, mainly for furniture and home wares, having a straight long tapestry needle and a curved upholstery needle. The upholstery needle is really good for sewing up holes in your furniture, but can also be useful on thick garments.

  As a wheelchair user, my “crotch wear” is always on the cuffs of my sleeves. <br><br>Coats, jumpers, thermals and shirts are all stained and ripped to shreds, so I’ve become a bit of an expert at mending them and making them more socially respectable. <br><br>Even my padded waterproof winter coat has repairs that you wouldn’t have guessed were ragged and all the thermal filling was falling out, but now patched with waterproof (food safe, I used what I had!) bag lining fabric. — definitely my most successful/almost invisible &nbsp;repair. <br><br>My scout shirt, torn, stained (and slightly burnt, from making prawn crackers on “Chinese takeaway” night) and generally worn out, was tie dyed and now is great to wear on camp/messy craft nights!

  There was only a short clip of you using the seam ripper but just in case that is how you tend to do it all the time I wanted to let you know there is a faster way! Use the longer point to do the initial cut and separate the fabrics, then flip the seam ripper over so the short point is in the seam and the long point is above, then you can just run it along the seam in one swoop like scissors on gift wrap! Works best when you are holding tension on the two fabrics while you do it. Hope this is helpful thanks for a great vid :)

I&apos;m dyspraxic (literally sobbed out of pure confusion and frustration at a beginner&apos;s quilting course a few weekends back), so it&apos;s really lovely to see someone saying, &quot;have a go, mess it up, it&apos;s ok&quot;, and properly explaining the basics of sewing. &lt;3

  Had to spend half of my shift at work today scanning for items that didn’t sell within a certain time frame on the sales rack and taking them out of the system to be thrown out, hangers and all, so I have little hope they’ll be recycled in some way. Felt rather demoralised and angry and sad when I got home, but this cheered me up. This and the knowledge that there are laws being passed to make this wasteful disposal of perfectly good clothes illegal in the EU.

  If you plan on sewing and can afford it get the fancy seam ripper! They usually have a wider handle which helps prevent hand/wrist pain when you inevitably end up seam ripping for hours 😉
