In comparing it to cooking and gardening, you just made me think that the way we buy all our clothes now is the same as if you were to eat out for every single meal

I think one of the most valuable things you bring to the internet, Leena, is how approachable you make things, and all the practical insight you give, whether it's on making friends, opting for sustainable products, or yes, even making knickers! Thank you for all that you do.

Pro-tip for the gusset lining: if you ever cut up any old 100% cotton t-shirts, those are great for this purpose. The sleeves of 1 t-shirt have lined several pairs of underwear. (But if you crop it or really just acquire t-shirt scraps by any means! Many are 100% cotton and it's a thing where I feel like it's easy to wind up with scraps for!)

Well done on your first pair! For the future, 100% natural fibre fabrics are preferable for the gusset instead of synthetic elastic fabrics, mainly for hygiene 😊

I love making my own knickers. I used some old t-shirts once and they were so comfy (because cotton), and had the t-shirt design across my bum, which was super cute.

Just because the fashion industry uses overlockers doesn’t mean it is professional, just faster :)

Li'l hack for doing leg elastic, lay it smooth with no stretch over the front part of the leg, but then pull on the elastic to stretch it on the back. This helps cup the fabric under your butt, and prevents it from digging into your thighs.

A walking foot for your machine is a great investment and not nearly as spendy as a serger. It has helped me a TON for tackling knits and bulky, heavy weight fabrics with my relatively basic home machine.

Make the elastic tighter under your butt than the front.
It will hold the knickers in place better and make them more comfortable.

Can I recommend that for patterns with multiple options that you might want to use (like these pants with high and low waisted options etc), rather than cutting up the original pattern trace off the pieces you need. You keep the traced pattern and if you want to make an identical pair of pants you use the traced pattern, but if you want to make a different variation/you've gone up/down a size then you have the original pattern to refer back to and you can trace off whatever variant you need this time. I imagine the pattern sizes on pants are probably narrow enough to fit on a wide roll of greaseproof paper.

I do this for everything because that's what my sewing teacher taught me to do (we were also pattern drafting so needed versions we could cut up and alter without loosing the original if we got it wrong), but it's probably only really worth bothering with as a home sewer for patterns like this which you know you are likely to remake and which you know you might want to make the other options of. Either because you change sizes a lot, or because there are multiple variations that you want.

Additionally to the problems you mentioned, M&S are one of the brands that are found the most clogging up the beaches in Ghana
