Yeah I was there. I was a weapons engineering mechanic on HMS Coventry. When we were told we're we were going we were all looking for an island around Scotland. I'll tell you one thing though, it's not much fun jumping into the South Atlantic from a burning ship. I survived some of my shipmates didn't ,RIP lads.

As islanders, we know how to invade one. Especially our own Falklands! Bless our lads who died doing it!

when the Gurkhas entered Stanley, the Paras quickly played a cruel joke by telling the Argentine prisoners that if a Gurkha smiled at you, he wanted to eat you. They then told the Gurkhas that because the Argentine prisoners were scared of them, to make sure they smiled to reassure them. Result: brown trouser explosion.

In the eighties I don’t think the Americans could have put up a invasion force any quicker than the UK .

The 'Queens Guards', the different regiments that make up the guards are part of a fighting force, not chocolate soldiers. Their training is just as tough as any other branch of the Army. Throughout the years the guards have taken part in all the conflicts this country has been involved in .

The thing you need to understand is that Argentina was ruled by a ruthless strong man at the time. He invaded the Falklands to boost his popularity at home.

Many lives were saved during the 1st Gulf war due to the lessons learnt from this war.

My father was linked to the British Military, and when I was a a young lad I would occasionally meet some senior military types. One that I met was an ex Para. He told me a story about the Gurkhas. He was part of a training detachment working with the Gurkhas on static line, low altitude drops. Basically you jump out of a plane a few hundred feet up, on a static line that opens the parachute when you are just out of the airplane. Anyway the briefing was brief, “we are jumping out of the plane at 400ft”. Apparently they was some consternation amongst the Ghurkas, but in Nepali, so no one knew what was the issue. After a bit they calmed down, got in the planes, jumped out at 400ft, no problems. After the jump the Para asked one of the Gurkha NCOs what the issue had been? The Gurkha did not realise they were getting parachutes, they thought they were jumping out of a plane at 400 et, and would just have to land as best they could. It was only when they realised that the Paras were jumping out as well, that they said “if the Paras can do it, we can do it”. They were ready to jump from 400ft unaided, because they had faith in their comrades, and they refused to show fear.

Our security guard, when I worked at Assurant, was John Buchan who was part of the Scots Guards that assaulted Tumbledown. He didn't really want to talk about his experiences much, but did mention that it was traumatic.
