Rescuing enemy soldiers during battle is something to behold. Brits are a strange breed.

What an amazing piece of history. Thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining in a morbid way. Actually apart from the disease it was a pretty satisfying resistance and eventual victory..

Reminds me of the incredible story of the siege of Malta in 1565 where about 500 Knights Hospitaller and 6000 foot soldiers successfully defended the Grand Harbour for nearly 4 months against 40,000 Ottomans until a relief force arrived.

Winning Gilbraltor was crucial for later conflicts especially during the Second World War, without it Malta survived and the North African campaign was held, protecting the route to India.

An era when politicians understood the importance of a powerful Navy, unlike the muppets we have today!

The Gunners wore a distinctive blue uniform. The coat was dark blue wool cloth, cut looser than standard infantry tunics, and featured scarlet lapels, collar, and cuffs. The lapels and cuffs had yellow worsted binding (lace) and yellow metal (brass) buttons. The waistcoat and breeches worn underneath the coat were white. They wore a black cocked tricorne hat bound in yellow wool tape. For heavy labour or battery duties, gunners often replaced their formal regimental coats with plain grey linen smocks. There were not enough Gunners to man all the guns, so the Infantry (both British and German) helped crew the guns under Gunner supervision. I found it interesting that in many of the pictures, those manning the guns were wearing red, not blue.
