Favourite line: 'It's on America's tortured brow that Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow'. He wrote this after he lost the commission to write new lyrics to a French song that was doing well for Frank Sinatra. Paul Anka got the commission instead, when he wrote the lyrics to My Way. David was angry, and wrote this instead, using the same chord progression.

Love this song, the story, video, instrumentation. The arrangements and guitar were by Mick Ronson, Bowie's partner in crime at the Ziggy Startdust era. And of course Rick Wakeman on piano.

Side note.... There's a British 2 season/ sereies entitled Life on Mars..They got permission to use this song for the opening of each episode for both series. Really great show with the premise of a. modern London. detective unwillingly being transported back to the early 1970s. And how he has to deal with the prejudice and bullying methods of policing back then all the time trying to get back to his own time.. Thanks for another insightful reaction

Rick Wakeman, noted session musician and member of the Strawbs,[3] plays piano on the album. I had a friend that turned me on to the album in 72, I occasionally listen to and love parts of the album.
