How Good Was Peter Ustinov's Poirot Actually?

Finney was belabored, Suchet was pitch-perfect, and Branagh was in-name-only. Ustinov was FUN. Sometimes, that's all it takes.

I love Mr. Ustinov's characterization and acting in "Evil Under the Sun". He is fun to watch in such a beautiful locale. His interpretation is not so heavy handed. I watch it every year.

Before watching this, I never knew that a dead Lyndon B. Johnson was one of the producers of the Poirot films.

I truly appreciate Suchet's portrayal of Poirot, not only for its faithfulness to the novels but also for his remarkable capture of the character's personality.

Personally I like both Ustinov's and Suchet's version of the character. In a sense actors perhaps should not play a character the same way and they're better off doing their own interpretation of the character.

Finney was just weird, Ustinov was mostly Ustinov (which was charming enough), but Suchet nailed it.

I think David Suchet is a more accurate Poirot. But Peter Ustinov was a more easy going Poirot. Maybe it was me but I couldn’t understand Albert Finney when he talked he just sounded like he was mumbling to me. But, maybe all the prosthetics inhibited the movement of his mouth. That would be understandable

Ustinov is always great and as Poirot was immensely enjoyable, but of course for Poirot, Suchet was perfect

It's interesting to learn that Brett and Suchet, both of whom are considered to be definitive in their respective roles, not only read the source material but also kept what amounts to a bible of character traits. That level of care and attention, and of course their acting prowess, is what I think made them definitive in the first place. They cared about getting it right, and I think a lot of contemporary actors taking on such legendary roles could do well to borrow a leaf or two from their books.

So comfortable in his own (character's) skin, he as Poirot embraces the viewers - many of whom seem to focus less and less on analyzing physical characteristics.

He was good enough for 6 films nut David Suchet is the definitive Poirot ❤

I try to watch his interpretation of Poirot as something completely different. Thus, I do find him entertaining. The problem with Mrs Christie’s detectives was always that they were quite unusual, not too say odd.

Another great episode. I remember the first time I saw Ustinovs DotN and while it was marvellous, I had already met Poirot in David Suchet.
