You are not the first to wonder why Larry had open shots. Here are the reasons. 1. Rules have changed. Back in Larry's day zone defense was not allowed, and you could not double a man unless he had the ball. 2. Larry always stayed in motion without the ball, he was constantly running his defenders into traffic, picks, and even their own teammates. 3. Larry was always being chased, but seldom caught. 4. The only time he stopped was to post up. And then you really knew you were in trouble.

Michael Cooper said it best, Larry was more dangerous when he didn't have the ball.

Larry's shots were beautiful....almost never touched the glass or the rim.

Bird was constantly on the move hard to find on the floor. That’s why it looks like. He’s so open all the time.

The reason it looked like some players didnt try to guard Larry is because most players had tried so many times and faile they knew they couldnt guard him, only a small handfull of the top NBA players had any luck guarding Larry, so many of the smaller players just gave up trying as they all knew it was a waste of time. The Pistons even put Dennis Rodman on Larry and even he was rarely successful at guarding Larry, and Rodman was one of the best defensive players in the league.

great reaction, ICookedUp, the reason Larry Legend would often be open like that is cause he was also an all time deadly passer, with both hands- so they were damned if they covered him- he passed and his teammates knew it- or damned if u dont cover him cause he can make any kind of shot, from anywhere with both hands! the Show Time Lakers called him the ultimate offensive force, he could dominate the game w/o scoring- LEGENDARY

What people don't realize is bird was an expert at getting open he was always moving coming off a pic rolling off a pic doing whatever it was very tough to stay with him and his motor never stopped

Bird is constantly running his man into traffic to get himself open. It ain't easy guarding someone with unlimited energy, IQ, and willpower.

I've watched a ton of bird's videos and I often thought that very same thing "Why aren't they double teaming him???" I've come to the conclusion that not only is he one of the greatest shooters of all time, he was also one if not the deadliest passers of all time. Bird immediately found the open man on a double team - and with laser like accuracy. That creates a hell of a predicament for a team.

If you take a good look at how Larry Bird played you would notice that he was in constant motion most of the time. He practiced shooting, but he also had a real habit of running.
One of his teammates, Quinn Buckner said that when he went to Larry's place in French Lick they went running and Bird ran up a hill that really slowed Quinn up and he got a better understanding of how well conditioned Bird was. He was essentially a long distance runner. He ran a 5 K marathon the day before the 60 point game and said he was concerned because he was a little stiff the morning of the game, but it sure didn't slow him down in the end.
I've seen Michael Cooper trying to catch up with Bird as he ran through the crowd in the paint. He was in condition.

The thing with Larry Bird was he practiced and practiced his ass off. To become great, he put his whole life into basketball. Only the greats like Jordan, Bird and Kobe lived basketball like it was the air they breathed. That's what makes the Greats into GOAT'S.

They never knew if Larry was really going to take the shot or pass it off to a near by teammate! Just because he is jumping doesn't mean he's going to take the shot! That freezes all of the defenders on the floor!
