Pyrrhus won several early victories against the Roman legions, but the conflict soon turned into a long and exhausting war. The war gradually expanded beyond Italy to Sicily, where Carthage and the Greek cities of the island became involved. Although Pyrrhus won victories on the battlefield, his losses were so severe that this campaign gave rise to the famous term “Pyrrhic victory” - a victory achieved at such a devastating cost that it ultimately leads to defeat.
