Imo, as soon as any enterprise starts running on volunteer time and donations of any sort, money and budgets are topics for transparency as opposed to "vulgar" discomfort. Hats off to ya'll for being open and honest about the real costs of running and simply maintaining this property. Making the private transition from owners of a large property to actual stewards of cultural and historical elements of your nation's history is an amazing thing. Good on you!

I love to listen to Luke talk. He is so intelligent about everything that has to do with Mapperton. He is a gracious and humble man with an enormous responsibility to his family and the public. Of course, I love Julie as well and they are so lucky to have each other because they both feel the same passion for Mapperton ❤

My grandfather sold up due to cost issues - nearly 600 years of family history came crashing to a halt.
Listening to this, perhaps he saved me from a monumental headache but I can't help but feel a little sad.

What a huge responsibility the two of you bear in keeping Mapperton going. You guys work so very hard with so many different balls in the air to bring in revenue. Thanks for speaking so candidly about the costs.

My family had an estate in America, and we lost our money in 1929. I’ve heard from older members of the family that there was no sympathy for people who are asset rich and income poor, especially if you can’t sell, either because it isn’t the right market, or it isn’t right/legal to do so, as in your case with the trust. We were able to sell the property and make a little money, but the shadows remain. “The feeling of being surrounded by beautiful and expensive things, and not have the money to fill yourself with food, is paradoxical. Life was a paradox for us.” That’s what my grandmother told me. But, it’s better than not having a roof over your head at all! The man she married, my grandfather, who later became a general contractor, could tell you about that! He grew up with 9 siblings and no money, and no home of their own. It’s really fascinating to see how things change. Keep going, and don’t give up, even when it looks grim!

People should know Mapperton is just under 2 hours from Highclere Castle. A very easy drive and probably beautiful. 20:22

I like this down to earth couple with the responsibility of a great old estate. I think coming from america or canada gives a perspective on these grand old homes, we just don't have them here. Our oldest homes are new compared to the ones in the uk. They really myst be both preserved and lived in. good job.

As an American, where we don’t have this kind of fabulous history, it’s a shame that the government doesn’t do more to help with keeping up and or with the tax burdens on these important icons !these great estates, history , antiques and gardens are a big part of tourism to the UK and without that all you have is rain 😂

If it makes you feel any better, we have a 235 year old home in Vermont, it's 4000sf on 6 acres with a small barn, and they're making us insure it for $1.3m because they say it would cost that much to replace it because building materials like what was used on our home in 1790 are no longer available😵‍💫
