What’s one volley cue you were taught that you now think might be wrong—and after watching this, are you going to try stepping after contact the next time you’re at the net?

love the Usain Bolt example about legs moving opposite arms, and the physics of the bowling release-reaction. Makes this lesson not just blindly about what you think you "should" do, and rather about what your body and physics need you to do.

Ryan’s an amazing coach.  Super creative. I had him do a video analysis of my serve, and he helped me tremendously. Great that you had him on as a guest.

Ryan is spot on.  Hit in the middle of the step.  1% of coaches understand this!   Great job Ryan!!

I really wish Ryan would’ve demonstrated.  I think a visual would make it much much easier.

Question about running down drop shots.  Are there any exceptions to stepping last with the foot on the side of the direction in which you are running?  I'm thinking of when I am not just pulled forward but also very WIDE to my backhand side.  I feel like then I want to step with my dominant hand side, to get the furthest extension.  I think of a baseball analogy, playing first base.  My pivot foot on the base is always the same, the foot opposite the glove hand.  That allows me the widest reach -- the full diagonal of my body -- whether I am stretching to get a ball to my right or to my left.  Going back to tennis: it seems very clear to me (from this video), as a right-handed player, that I need to step last with my right foot to be balanced and reaching a drop shot to my right.  But it also seems like I might need to use my right foot to extend to my left with my right hand just to be able to get the racquet on a ball far to my left.  (Unless I want to pull some JJ Wolf stunt and switch hands with the racquet).  The last foot that is planted (pivot) remains the same on either side, allowing dominant racquet hand and the foot on that side to make the last stretching step.

In his books on playing tennis that he published approximately a century ago, the great Bill Tilden claimed that one should always step across the ball (closed stance) before making contact.  This may be one reason he was primarily known as a baseliner, and never felt very comfortable at the net.

Selfishly speaking, as a lefty, I really wish coaches would use “dominant” vs non-dominant” language vs left/right. Great info, but I had to listen a few times to picture it and try it out shadow style. I may fall over my own feet on court tomorrow! 😂

I ran down a drop shot, stumbled, and hit my teeth onto the pavement. I lost a tooth. No joke
