  The viewtiful joe demo disc has one very precise usecase. It can wipe mem cards and prepare them for complete reformating restoring full capacity. Certain games tended to corrupt mem cards and the ps2 lacked any built in feature to wipe and reformat a mem card to restore it to its full capacity. Later, ps2 disc swapping and modchips got popular and tools like mc annihilator got made.<br>There is a similar behavior with roque squadron 3 on gc console, after a prolonged gaming session when it tries to save, it brings an error message that the card is corrupted. If you acknowledge the message and continue the prompts, your card will REALLY get wiped. However, if you switch off the console before dismissing any prompt, your mem card will not get wiped and retain all its saves. Swapping the mem card during this error behavior does work too.

  How interesting! Never knew about these bugs, but DID experience one once. It was such a kick in the gonads, too! Such memories never fade with time, only forgotten.

  All these years during PS2 era, I was a part of the PS Underground and never received a single demo disc from Sony a maybe a couple but that&apos;s it and I only got the combo demo disc, Jak and daxter, eqoa, and sly copper. Never anything else was ever sent to me yet my friends got more demos than I ever did.

This is why it uses so much security, not just for piracy protection, but also to guard against bad updates, stolen keys and much more. The thing with the CD was, that once you scanned it as approved, you could trust it. It could never change. It was fixed in time. And thats why consoles with no internet capability (or just multiplayer with no software loading) was designed to trust CDs.<br><br>The thing was that the glitch (with the timer and the debug data written to memory card) was not checked for.<br><br>Another thing why modern consoles uses isolation, is also that, when games where shipped on CDs, only a few companies got &quot;permission&quot; to release games for the platform. &quot;Indie games&quot; didn&apos;t exist. This was why Sony could basically trust the games. Since game development was basically a VIP club with only the most highest ranking trusted people, Thats why the console didn&apos;t need to know more than that the disc was signed by Sony, its approved.<br><br>Nowadays, almost anyone could release a game for the console and get it approved. Thats why it must nowadays use virtualization and isolation - because mowadays, a one man, unknown company could get the same permission to write games as Capcom. Thats why the console must protect itself. It can no longer rely on a simply compliance checking since thats assumes you can trust the developer.

  There is a good reason why mission critical systems do not allow exception handling. It gives programmers a false sense of safety to not tightly control all paths that can lead to the program going haywire.

  I remember when this happened. I was given a way crappier list of games to choose from. They were all 20 dollar games. I ended up getting atv off-road fury 2 with a notch drilled in the spine. I also didn&apos;t have to send in any proof. I forget if it actually happened to me or not. I think maybe it did but there wasn&apos;t anything on the card I cared about? I definitely did have the disc and heard the news and got the free game though.
