For me "The Spirit of Radio" is both a celebration of the impact of radio DJs of the past and also a critique of the industry and how, over time, money and consolidation took more and more control away from DJs over what was played and promoted.

Who else had "unobtrusive" in a song. Neil Peart was a lyrical master 🎶🥁

The song was created to represent someone scanning a radio and landing on different stations: the change of rhythms, musical styles, time signatures.
This is my favourite album by Rush, maybe my favourite of all time. Every song is glorious. The production is tip-top, their best ever studio sound. You are in for a treat Angelica.

Every word Mr. Peart wrote, and every tap of every fill, was purposeful. No more, no less. RIP, Prof. May you inspire for generations.

The DJ on the screen when you stopped is Donna Halper. She was a DJ and program director at a Cleveland Album Oriented Rock FM station. She introduced the USA to Rush by playing Working Man from their debut album RUSH.

They couldn't find any record label that wanted their music, so they recorded their first album on their own dime, pressed something like 1,000 LP's and released it on their own record label (Moon Records). They sent albums to every record label they could find, and a rep for one label gave Donna a copy of their album. At a little over 7 minutes Working Man was long enough for DJ's to take a bathroom break. Mercury records saw their potential and signed them.

The liner notes included 'With Special Thanks to Donna Halper of WMMS in Cleveland for getting the ball rolling'.

The words , written by the drummer Neil Peart are about musical integrity and not selling out to the commercial/corporate giants who run the music business....
This is a statement song about sticking it to the man❤️❤️❤️🎶🎵🎵🎼🎧🎤🎤

The Spirit of Radio is probably my favorite "radio friendly" Rush song. I get choked up when I watch this particular animated video as it pays tribute to people, stations, etc that are important in radio and Rush history. I get particularly emotional when I see Donna Halper shown with a copy of their debut album. She was a DJ/programmer at 100.7 WMMS in Cleveland back when they released their debut album. She was given a copy and played the hell out of Working Man, and is often credited with starting Rush's popularity in the States, particularly in the Midwest. As a native Clevelander and Rush fan, she is like a saint to me.

Imagine driving down the road, reaching over to find a good song on FM radio, and having to travel through static and commercial noise before landing on the perfect song…that’s what the beginning of the song is. Beautiful.
