“If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice” is one of my favorite Rush lyrics!!

"Each of us, a cell of awareness. Imperfect and incomplete. Genetic blends with uncertain ends, on a fortune hunt that's far too fleet. " That is genius poetry. And a perfect description of humans in general.

The whole album Permanent Waves with this song on it is great. 😂

I have always and will always believe that the shared solo in this song is the pinnacle of their writing and playing skills. It is far beyond the realm of any other rock band I've heard, and is more intense and perfectly assembled than any other solo effort I've heard. Bar none. That one minute or so is a masterpiece in technique and skill.

That instrumental section is even better live. Insanely good is what it is.

My favorite Alex solo is the first one in La Villa Strangiato, but my favorite minute of music EVER recorded is the guitar/bass solo in Freewill. Absolutely brilliant and always cranked to 11!

I heard that when Geddy and Alex decided to seriously dedicate themselves to the 50Something tour, this was the first song they played. Can you imagine them picking up their instruments after a decade and diving back into a song of such complexity?! If you're in a Permanent Waves kick, be sure to check out Jacob's Ladder. It's an epic.

On many Rush songs, when one solos, all solo. It's one of my favorite things about Rush.
