  You've had every day since your 18th birthday to buy ammo. Don't blame anyone else. 5.56 and an AR are hard to beat.A second back up is a long range hunting rifle.

  Any gun with a good stock pile is better than nothing....a 22LR, 22MAGNUM,  a inexpensive 9mm with a good supply of inexpensive FMJ rounds is better than trying to have only 250 rounds of high priced ammo....a revolver with at least 4 inch barrel will also work....everybody preparing for SHTF, civil war, society collapse,  should have an AR 15...you can buy a decent AR 15 from PSA for 500 dollars or less....lever gun 357 with a 357 pistol or 44 magnum also great...investing in a case of ammo is one of the best investments you can make and will never regret... i have cut back on eating out for a while to buy my stock pile and was very glad i done it..this was a long time ago but i had a strong feeling to do it....if all you get is a 10/22 rifle with some high velocity ammo and a cheap revolver with at least 500 rounds ammo that can save you from starving and protection from mean people...

  Guess I'm good to go. Marlin made Marlin model 1894 in .357 mag, Stevens 311 side by side and 00 buckshot to go with it. While not the cheapest ammo, .357 mag and .38 special are super common. I roll my own ammo too. Colt model 1911 in .45acp and my Charter Arms Bulldog Pug in .44 special for those more intimate gun fights.

  I have multiple Henry 357 lever rifles, side gate.  But they are definitely not the only firearms in my safe.

  Whether large scale conventional war or SHTF, firearms that are most effective in the 0-50 yds. will be the most useful. That would include revolver handguns, lever action, and bolt action carbines with magazines. They need the least amount of maintenance. Again, they would be the most useful, practical in the real world. The 22 lr and 357 magnum would be perfect.

  You want the AR everyone else carrying one so there your result, I’m willing to bet there’s more 5.56 or 223 rounds out there more then any other round? You want a 12guage and 22 long rifle or a very power airgun is very quiet.
