I've been fat my entire life - a lot of stems from food insecurity and trauma (my family comes from generational poverty and I lived in abuse and neglect - cheap food was the thing, and i'd never go to therapy, because i'd would have been taken away from my mom). I've been bullied and harassed my whole life due to my weight. it didn't matter that I was trying to be kind and the best person I could be... it was always, always about my weight. it made me suicidal. nobody could see my humanity - only the flesh it was in.

it's... difficult to parse my own opinions on fat acceptance/the movement. on one hand, I do appreciate the ideas of "this is your one life, you have to love yourself, you have to love the body you're in", and appreciating all bodies as beautiful. on the other, I resent the fact that if you decide you want to try and lose weight, your body autonomy is seen as "giving up" and "betraying" the movement and the people in it. the core of the message is sound but when people like Tess ignore the health ramifications of being fat, it's... questionable at best.

I'm currently in therapy for my trauma and binge eating disorder, which led to my current weight. this isn't easy. none of this is. but I hope that I can recover. i hope that I can lose this weight. not just for my own vanity, but for my health, and.. idk, maybe people will start to see me as a person for once.

anyways. thank you for making the video. i appreciate that you touched on the fact that poor people can be fat, as food insecurity is a real thing that can lead to obesity and people just don't see or understand it. and thank you for approaching the topic with sensitivity and care. apologies for this long comment. take care of yourself.

The "Yo-yo dieting" argument has never made sense to me. All it shows is that there is a lot of misinformation out there on how to construct a proper diet model that will be successful long term (eg. the Circle Diet by Greg Doucette). Its not an argument against the concept of dieting itself.

its a tired trope at this point, the boomer comic of a big fat guy gulping down all the food from a skinny undernourished subject but its literally true, colonized countries in southeast asia and africa were literally exporting their food to the colonizers. during the bengal famine they were still gathering up grain and rice to ship to the UK

Maybe instead of saying "diet" we should say "lifestyle". Eating healthier and exercising should be apart of everyone's lifestyle. The way we word things is important. Maybe

I'm listening to this while writing my history dissertation and I am very upset at how much better this video is than my history dissertation. Beautiful work!

dude, this is so well done I so rarely see people discussing the connection between health and global capitalism and this video presented everything so well! Esp for people without extensive prior knowledge about colonialism and international development. I had a lecture touching on these topics last semester, from the perspective of the current climate crisis - not only are people malnourished, the way the west (and the geopolitical regions exploited by the west) are doing agriculture is also leading to 'malnourished' soil. So yeah, we need to change big time

Thank you for such a nuanced perspective. I really wish more Fat Acceptance/HAES people were willing to fully address the role of capitalism in the "obesity epidemic". It's far more complex than just discussing the evils of the diet industry. That is merely one manifestation of it. Declaring it "okay" to be fat is not the way to liberation, unfortunately.

I gained about 12 Kg weight. I don't care about being fat or anything, but breathing gets difficult, you'll get tired sooner and it'll be really difficult to stay active and you feel like your bones can't handle that much weight. Anyways I started exercising about 5 months ago and I'm loosing weight (you can easily access home workouts on YT like body project or lazy girl or walk at home etc.). Stay healthy and stay hydrated yall, peace.

I haven't been so intensely focused while watching a YouTube video as I was watching your video, in a long time. Really amazing content, especially for under 23 minutes. Thank you. 🤩
