I think the reason he was setting such a high bar was because he wanted to eventually drink it. He had to make sure it's super pure so he can be assured the final product is safe to drink.

I didn't like chemistry in high school, never could wrap my head around why I should care about organic compounds, benzene rings, valance layers, balancing equations, all that stuff. And to be honest, I forgot pretty much all of it after I got into college. Now I know confidently that it wasn't that I didn't like chemistry, I just wasn't taught it right. NileRed and other amateur chemists making somewhat chaotic and entertaining but informative videos served to make me look at chemistry "wait, that's actually really cool" and channels like yours are making me appreciate and understand the subject that I dreaded as a teenager. Great stuff.

I love your point at 1:17:29
"There's some people that object to this kind of content because it's promoting unsafe activities. I don't think that's the case at all. No more than someone riding a bike and doing stunts on a bike is promoting reckless activity. They're showing off their skills.".
I think you captured the spirit of the channel perfectly. Nile Red should be sponsored by Red Bull because of his stunts :)

I'm a pharmacy student. One of the reasons why I chose a pharmacy is due to NileRed.

That moment when you ask if School Glue Alcohol tastes like School is how NilesBlue was made.

To be fair... As a woodworker, we refer to poly vinyl acetate glue as PVA glue, pretty much exclusively, and that's even how it's marketed. So maybe that's where the confusion comes in?

3:18 "Watch this edit" just to admire the transition 😭 HAHA I love this! This moment made it clear that this would be a worthwhile video to watch. Personable and informative commentary, not just a lecture. Great!

its actually crazy to see a reaction suddenly jump 130°C in 30 seconds. i could imagine someone going “oh i need to run and grab this thing, wont be gone a full minute it’ll be fine” and 45 seconds later the flask cracks from a massive temperature change they never expected so fast

I think it’s important to know that this type of glue is widely called “PVA glue” and pretty much never called “PVAc” glue. While it’s important to be precise, it’s also important to know one’s audience and speak so as to be best understood by it.

One of the things I love about Nile, is that he's a chemist that shows chemistry with a goal. "I have this chemical, I want this chemical."

In school, most of the chemistry we covered was chemistry that happened, i.e. "this is a reaction that happens" - maybe I can call this "passive chemistry" or "observation-focused chemistry". Chemistry was basically a way to explain the world, and maybe we looked at how something is used once or twice.

But with Nile, he starts with "I have this, I can make it this, let's engineer a system to get there." It's active chemistry, goal-driven chemistry, or chemical engineering, right?

That's imo missing in school, at least in the education I experience here in Germany (high-school level of chemistry, basically.)

Basically, seeing someone doing chemistry *intentionally*, not to demonstrate, but to get to a goal - that's incredibly cool and unique. I think that's in general something a lot of educational creators can look at - "let's use chemistry/biology/physics/... to achieve X"

One other example - though I hear there's critique of him - is thought emporium. I first saw him with a "let's build a camera that shows wifi networks physically," and he also did "let's bio-engineer and gene-edit e.coli to 'cure' lactose intolerance." Now, the latter has received lots of critique (I can't comment on that, I'm an idiot in biology), but still - the idea of, you know, having a goal, and engineering towards it, showing the process - that's super appealing to me.

A dry explanation of "how does polymer chain reaction work" "how do you splice a gene" is like, less interesting than an engineered project.

Sorry for the long comment, I think this video just taught me a lot about what I like in education youtube channels
