  All my life, I've kept 2 books going at a time.....one fictional, and one non fictional.....I just love it!!!

  Over the last 2 years I read 110 books and deleted my social media. I feel like I gained a 2nd layer of cautiousness due to my improved critical thinking and vocabulary.

  Dear Fellow Readers - I am honoured by your reflections. I find it interesting and encouraging to learn of the reading habits from those who have shared. In case any of you might find it useful, the shortest, wittiest reflection (about 500 words) on what different types of reading can offer to us is Francis Bacon's essay "Of Studies." The essay begins..."Studies serve for delight, ornament, and for ability".

  I have just finished reading Dostoyevsky's "Crime and Punishment", and indeed I found it was like brain gym, like trying to solve difficult puzzles at times, thanks to a complicated plot and philosophical conversations.  Astounding book!

  Also, reading out loud helps exercise the brain. Especially for us introverts.

  Ive switched, to an extent,  to printed books. I read every day. Handwriting notes also helps with memory and comprehension

  thank you for pointing out the difference between audio books and reading, I always felt there is a difference because when you listen to an audio book, you are easily distracted with your eyes and hands, while reading with a book requires both your hands and eyes, therefore you are more focused and you can retain more information. Reading physically is also easier to re-read certain interesting or complicated texts, while listening to an audiobook (especially while you are doing something else) needs more motivation to rewind.

  Mortimer J. Adler’s “How to read a book” taught me the importance of syncopation, or the “great conversation” as you said.

  I started reading aloud several years ago.  I've also taken to memorizing Shakespeare, and writing down by hand well written passages, fiction and non.  It has greatly improved my understanding of all things.
