I'm 17 and I've replaced social media with reading and it's absolutely changing my life for the better

My phone no longer sleeps next to me, it’s in another room at night. I dropped all social media, except for YouTube, and in a couple years YouTube will be out as well. In stead of scrolling on my phone before bed, I open my bible and read it. People stopped looking to God for their meaning and started looking at themselves.

I’ve been being shown this lately. I have the strongest urge to take it back to the 90s with everything. No internet or devices. Landline phone, radio or cds, taking regular pictures and having them printed out. Writing letters to friends. I think it would change our whole life drastically

I've noticed that the more time I spend on my phone, the harder it gets to actually enjoy normal life. It's not even just the hours you lose scrolling, it's the constant feeling that you should be checking something or consuming something. I started making small changes around that, especially with sleep, screen time and having parts of the day with no stimulation. I was reading Reset Your Body and Mind around the same time, and that whole idea of slowing things down and getting back to basic routines really stuck with me. Nothing extreme, but I definitely feel more present now.

A few years ago I went to a park to take my walk.
I was SHOCKED by what I saw.
There must have been 200 people at this park.
And literally everyone, whole families, were staring at their phones.
Families sitting in the grass, kids and parents....staring at their phones.
Some youngsters were walking my way,and just about walked right into me.
Because,of course, they were staring at their phones, and not aware of the world around them.
I have gotten used to seeing this kind of scene.
And I feel SO lucky I am not caught up in it.
I am typing this reply on a desktop PC in my bedroom.
When I am done, off goes the computer, and into the world I go.

Bought a flip phone last summer, changed my primary number to the flip, and most often try and leave my iphone at work. So just during the work week I have gained 75 hours away from the smart phone. I needed it and it's been wonderful.

I've asked my 10 year old son the two questions. His answers were:
1. Helping people
2. My parents

I'd like to throw in the loss of community too. Yes phones are a culprit but also cars. We drive through drive throughs , rather than visit a cafe where everyone is sitting and conversing.

i took a short hike last weekend, 5 hours or so. No phone, alone, like I was used to my whole life. And after 30 minutes, my mind was SCREAMING at me for lack of stimulation. Almost in the middle I wanted to turn around and go back... that's how ridiculous my mind behaved. After another hour of cold-turkey I was fine again (except for blister on my feet). It is quite the wake up call for me how much, even in my age, can my mind break. And I'm 40. I can't imagine how hard kids will have it.

I just realized the other day, that the reason "time has sped up" for me at least, is bc I spend so much time staring into this damn thing!! You think, " I'll just check my messages" you open your phone and hour later, maybe you'll remember to check those messages!!!
