This didn’t make it into the movie, but in real life Karen had an affair with Paulie.

Amazing quote by Roger Ebert about Goodfellas: "And it is there, on the crux of that paradox, that the movie becomes Scorsese’s metaphor for so many modern lives. He doesn’t parallel the mob with corporations, or turn it into some kind of grotesque underworld version of yuppie culture. Nothing is that simple. He simply uses organized crime as an arena for a story about a man who likes material things so much that he sells his own soul to buy them— compromises his principles, betrays his friends, abandons his family, and finally even loses contact with himself. And the horror of the film is that, at the end, the man’s principal regret is that he doesn’t have any more soul to sell."

Fun fact: Joe Pesci did Home Alone right after filming this. Both were released in 1990. Also, the money stolen from the Lufthansa heist would be worth over $28 million today, adjusted for inflation.

The real Henry Hill does a commentary track saying Paulie comes off like a good guy in the movie but he was a brutal man irl.

6:45 That's a major reason why a lot of kids fall into criminal organizations, to this very day. You take boys who grew up in broken homes and these criminals give you sense of family and belonging. When you didn't have the best or any male role models around, a young man hearing "atta boy" and "im proud of you" from a bunch of older guys, it sticks with you because you didn't get it from the person you were supposed to.

The movie 'Casino' gives you the story of the mob while they were in Vegas. Martin Scorsese directed all three Goodfellas, Casino, & Wolf of Wall Street.

Fun fact: the old lady who they have dinner with while they’re whacking Billy Bats is director Martin Scorsese’s real life mother Catherine, she improvised nearly all of her lines, and appeared in some of his other films as well playing roles similar to this one.
