My jaw dropped at Under a Killing Moon. What?! at those textures and in 1994?! Would have never known without this video, what a great find.

1:34 is the most elegantly simple, clear, and concise explanation of 3D graphics I've seen. Also, as a non-programmer, the sections on ray casting and 2.5D really helped me visualize those techniques.

The first "3D" game I played was "3D Monster Maze" on the ZX81, with a 16KB memory expansion, back in 1981.

worth mentioning Virtua Fighter 1, 1993. Came out after your pick for oldest, but before the other older ones you listed. it uses 3d character animation, instead of ultima's flat sprites.

The first fully 3D game(s) might be Driller (1987), Dark Side (1988), Total Eclipse (1988), Castle Master (1990) other candidates include The Terminator (1991) and Hunter (1991).

Jumping Flash was the first 3D platformer. “3D platformers” prior to it used 2D sprites with scaling to give an illusion of true 3D space.
Jumping Flash is the first 3D platformer to have full 3D models and 3D environments.

I said Ultima Underworld the moment I saw the video title pop up in the feed. Glad to see you came to the right answer :-)

Funny mentioning Ultima Underworld came more than a year before Doom, since when John Carmack saw that at a convention he remarked he could do the same thing but run faster. That's why he made his raycaster engine that was used to create Hovertank 3D as a prototype, Catacombs 3D as a proof of concept (with EGA colored textured walls), and at last, the granddaddy of all fps: Wolfenstein 3D with VGA colors. :)

Other early 3D textured games that predate Quake are Magic Carpet and King's Field (both from 1994). I wouldn't count them as first but just thought I'd mention them.

5:25 Resident Evil was a bit behind the times: Doctor Hauzer for the 3DO was a fully 3D survival horror in 1994.
