  Hi Cassie, just wanted to say that my daughter used to love your videos and would try to get me to watch along with her. It was never really my thing but ever since she passed away I find myself watching and use it as a connection to my girl. Silly perhaps but just wanted to say thanks for bringing my daughter a lot of joy and entertainment

  This is such an underrated movie, and Daniel Day Lewis and Pete Postlethwaite are amazing in it. It’s a true story as well.

  Yes, this is a true story. I was nearly shot for those pub bombings, and I was six years old at the time. The army were raiding the house of anyone with an Irish name (we lived in a posh part of Surrey) and I thought it was a game, got my toy gun and shouted &apos;stick them up&apos;. Luckily the senior officer just managed to deflect the guy who took a pop at me. And yes, the British authorities tortured thousands of people, mostly innocents. A number of them died.

  The day of their release was huge in Ireland. The image of an enraged Gerry in his shirt was burned forever into my mind. The BBC gave it some coverage too as most people in Britain had figured out that these men ( and the Birmingham 6 ) were falsely imprisoned. The film absolutely made my blood boil.

  i used to know Gerry and I found him a kind and friendly man who loved music. We knew each other in London, where I was a political cartoonist with 5 of the British newspapers&apos; When we both went back to live in Belfast we still kept in touch. I arranged to meet up with hin and asked him to come down and visit me on the coast. But, he hadn&apos;t told me how bad his cancer was and died suddenly. Iattended his funeral and was buried at Milltown Cemetery, where many of my relatives lie.

  At the time this was released it was 1994, so the shadow of The Troubles still loomed large in Britain.<br><br>A few of the British actors, chiefly Emma Thompson among them, received threats of being blacklisted in the British acting community for taking their roles in this film.<br><br>In the end it was nominated for several Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis, Best Supporting Actor for Pete Postlethwaite and Best Actress for Emma Thompson.<br><br>Unfortunately that year Schindler&apos;s List came out and swept The Oscars, so it was very overshadowed at the time. Still mine and quite a few people&apos;s favorite DDL film.
