  I DO NOT care if you are one of those black people who avoids black "struggle" films. The Color Purple has to be the one exception.

  Mister in the film surely was not a one note villain. But I wish the film had included more of his evolution in the novel, like learning to sew and sewing and talking with Celie on the porch for years, apologizing to her, proposing to her again for a true marriage of mind and soul, not just flesh, and accepting her “No” with no problem, with humor even. I wonder if that was some of what got left on the cutting room floor.<br><br>I bet you a lot of people would not have been satisfied with that either.

  Whoopi was ROBBED. I am glad she got it for Oda Mae Brown but that should have been Oscar number 2 imo

I loved that ending scene when Nettie arrives with Cee&apos;s family. It shows a stark difference between African American life vs African. <br><br>I totally understand why Tina Turner didn’t accept the role, especially knowing she had experienced severe abuse herself. No way. Some roles hit way too close to home. People loved <b>The Color Purple</b> me included but folks definitely weren’t feeling *Beloved*. That movie scared me!<br><br>I think women from different cultures can resonate with <b>The Color Purple</b> because the exploitation and mistreatment of women and girls is unfortunately woven throughout history. Girls being married off and impregnated as soon as they began menstruating was commonplace in many societies. Men were often given social and legal permission to physically abuse women as they saw fit.<br><br>Alice Walker wasn’t telling lies. The historical record is well documented when it comes to the ways Black girls and women were mistreated, including by men within their own communities. <b>The Color Purple</b> is painful because none of it feels completely unbelievable. It reflects realities that women have experienced across generations and cultures.
