If I remember correctly, the Stansbury Coal mine, a few miles north of Rock Springs, was shut down sometime around 1930. In the mid 1970s, the water was pumped out of it and it was reopened. There was a lot of water entering the mine, after reopening, due to the bore holes used to decide if they wanted to reopen it. I was the one in charge of the smaller pumps during the shift that I was on. I never could get used to shift work, so I left before I had one year in.

In 1981 , the house I bought the year before almost fell into the mine. They later told me that there was 3 mine shafts on top of one another. The hole in my yard was so big and deep that I could'nt see the bottom. Afterwards, people would laugh and ask me if I had seen any missing children down there. So there were'nt just coal mines.

I lived in northeast Pennsylvania in the 1990s. Subsidences were not uncommon then, a byproduct of the years of anthracite mining. The underground mining there stopped after the Susquehanna River was undermined, flooding many tunnels in what is coincidentally called the Wyoming Valley, killing a dozen miners in 1972.

Funny to hear him speak of 50 years ago, my wife and I married and lived in Rock Springs in 1976. I remember the mine subsidence issues when I worked for the city on Low Income housing. We lived on Dewar drive then out at 14 mile ranch for a while. <br>Thanks for a look back.

In your research did you ever come across the name of or pictures of Fred A Schuler? He was my Grandfather, a plumber in the mines and a leader in the fire department.
