I’ve worked in the gypsum mining industry for over 40 years. This video is a very realistic representation of the underground non-metal mining industry. The cultural aspect is spot-on of the mining-family that you spend a majority of your time with for years and years. We have had underground gypsum mines that were worked for over 100 years and surface quarries that have been active since the Civil War (1860s) to the present time.

I grew up about 20 miles from the mines. My father retired from one of them a few years ago, and both my brothers are miners.

Blessed to be able to work at one of these 4 mines/refineries. The sweetwater county community is very tight knit. Started at a coal mine and plan on retiring at the trona patch. Great documentary it shows a different side of our community

This documentary popped up in my Youtube feed, it was very well done. I was surprised to see Bill Madura, apparently he can wrench,   I haven't seen him since he was owning the field as our centerback in high school.

Bottom of that mine is still 3,000 feet above sea level.

I worked as a young mechanical engineer for a German mining equipment company from ‘85 to ‘95 and we installed that first long wall shearer (EDW-500) at the FMC Green River mine. It was at the time the most powerful machine of this kind and I spent a bit of time out there to install it and train the operators and mechanics. To me, this video was a true flashback! Thank you, PBS and I hope you’ll get your funding back!
