  If Moses had Given O&apos;Malley the land he wanted in Brooklyn, the Dodgers would have probably never moved. Robert Moses was the true vilain in this play. <br>Chavez Ravine had been cleared out before O&apos;Malley asked for it. But he was seen as the bad guy in LA for years, with the Mexican-American people in LA staying away until Fernandomania came about in 1981.

  Robert Moses was the main reason for the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn. No one will convince me otherwise.

  Thanks for posting this. Growing up in the &apos;70s as a Mets fan, NY&apos;s Dodgers/Giants era was part our lore. I wasn&apos;t around in &apos;57, but 50 years ago middle aged people remembered this well, and many of the retired players were always showing up. It&apos;s too bad there&apos;s not more on the Internet. It&apos;s a great story, and it&apos;s been largely forgotten. I also like your including O&apos;Malley&apos;s fight for the Chavez Ravine location. That&apos;s a chapter that is usually left out.

  We should mention the Braves moving to Milwaukee and immediately drawing more than a million fan in year 1 probably expedited the Dodgers and Giants west as well.

  I love the dedication of both New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers fans, after their teams left, they refused to root for the New York Yankees, which lead to the creation of the New York Mets, and now former Giants and Dodgers fans, once bidder rivals, now root for the same team.

  Wasn&apos;t just &apos;&quot;...balancing things out...&quot; other NL owners wanted more of the cut of ticket money from Dodgers home games to offset higher<br>travel cost to west coast. Before 1953 most road trip travel could be handled by train, but with west coast added air travel was only option - <br>with additional cost. BTW - Braves were &apos;making money&apos; the first year in Milwaukee 1953 thru end of the decade.<br> O&apos;Malley talked Stoneham into SF as a way of keeping the &apos;rivalry&apos; and also not losing more income to other owners. &nbsp;<br>From their attendance high mark of 1.8m in &apos;47 till they left, Dodgers attendance would drop (w/occasional one-year spikes) due to their base moving<br>out of Brooklyn/lack of parking/aging ballpark. &nbsp;O&apos;Malley saw what was happening in Milwaukee and knew he could not keep up at Ebbets.<br>He sold the ballpark/land to developer Marvin Kratter in 10/1956 creating more pressure for a new location.<br>The main point of a new ballpark was the location - which you didn&apos;t mention. &nbsp;He wanted the Atlantic Ave. &amp; Flatbush Ave where the Barclays<br>Center is now. &nbsp;A location that has many transit options - 7 subway lines for customers to arrive from many different parts of Manhattan and <br>Brooklyn plus the LIRR to take fans home to Long Island after a game. He knew that this was the only way to survive in Brooklyn. &nbsp;Moses and <br>NYC were asked to use &apos;eminent domain&apos; statutes to acquire the land but that was not an accepted process then (as it is now) and Moses was <br>dead set on creating a new &apos;World&apos;s Fair&apos; in Flushing and needed a stadium to anchor the scheme. &nbsp;Robert Cairo&apos;s book &apos;The Power Broker&apos; covers<br>this thoroughly.<br>The Eddie Grant memorial plaque wasn&apos;t found for decades. &nbsp;You should have mentioned that the Pirates closed Ebbets first on 9/24 followed by<br>2 off days then closed the schedule and Polo Grounds 9/29. &nbsp;Pirates opened the Mets era at PG 4/13/62.<br>What really started the changes in MLB was the Braves moving to Milwaukee and immediate financial success in 1953.
