If I may quote Bill James  “Don Mattingly was 100% ball player, 0% bullshit”.

I often call Don Mattingly “the classiest man in sports “.

Was born and raised in Evansville and met Don when I was a kid at my cousins high school basketball game of all places. I was about 8 at the time "33 now" and have always loved baseball. I noticed him sitting in the bleachers on the other side of the gym along with everyone else just casually watching the game as a normal person. I kept telling my family and the people around me it was him but they were unsure. But I knew. After the game I walked up to him alone and nervously introduced myself and asked for his autograph on a small piece of paper my mom pulled out of her purse. I will never forget how kind and admirable he was that I wanted to meet him and talked with me for a few minutes. Still have the autograph to this day.

Hearing him say.  I didn’t won’t my boys to grow up without their dad.  Made me respect him even more.  He has always been my favorite player and now one of my favorite dads. He is right. It no comparison.  I love it.
