Showing my age here but 1:09 is how I still rate games.

I feel like so many people now-a-days only view things in absolutes, and not just in gaming. You either have to hate something or love something. I've seen people point to a game that received a 7/10 and they call it "dogshit." Dude, if a 7 is a bad game, You have never played a bad game !

Heavy Heroes defender here, I'll try to speak some about the negatives. It is clear for me that all the negatives of this game can be attributed to the lack of polish. Like, for example:
-A lot of mechanics are absolutely broken. Dash rings barely work, the formations don't align properly, the physics in the pinball tables don't work in the slightest, the special stages only work in concept, and as you say sometimes the physics system straight up breaks because the code decides you are flying now. That is just plain and simple lack of polish.
-A lot of mechanics are not broken, but are not realized to their full potential. For example: with a few tweaks, the speed characters could have been made much more controllable and easy to handle, akin to the adventure games. The punches of the the power characters, mostly in the case of Knux, send him over bottomless pits, and this could have been fixed by making the character fully controllable while punching. The fly characters could have been controlled separately outside of the totem formation, making them faster and the formation less slugish (in fact, the characters have all the animations in the game and are fully programmed for this, it is just not implemented). The triangle dive could have been slightly faster to simulate the gliding of the adventure games, etc. There is a mod made by AlexLuna that mostly adresses this issues and I strongly recommend everyone that hates the game to give it a try, as it polishes the handling of the characters and makes them much more fun to play as. There is also the independent flying characters mod which, while not fully complete and has some bugs, it makes the fly characters much more fun to play in my opinion.
-The bosses clearly show that the game was rushed as hell. There were other bosses planned for the Casino and Mansion levels, but they were left out, probably because of lack of time. The reuse of the Egg Hawk with one of the zeppelins from Grand Metropolis held below with duct tape is kinda embarrasing. I am sure that there was also another boss planned for the area, but they couldn't work on it. The Egg Emperor rocks in concept and the mechanics are very good in my opinion, but the fight is just broken because of lack of polish. The team battles, while they were not really great in previous games (series never excelled in boss battles to be honest, always okay at best), are straight up broken in Heroes. In fact you can just spam Tornado and end every single rival fight in 5 seconds. They almost don't exist outside of cutscenes because of how broken they are.
-I think that originally the idea was to introduce the players with TR no matter what, but at some point it might have been decided that maybe locking TS behind a TR playthrough might put off players so they put TS first and fucked up the balance of the campaigns. I also never had any real problem with TC, as you said I find the level design so much fun and the mechanics so fun that I didn't care any time about the most tedious missions. That is, if you are playing the campaign missions. The extra missions are straight up from hell and you can see that they inspired the terrible game that is Shadow 05.

Positives:
-Mechanics and gameplay in this game is top notch. The team wanted to go for something more simple and arcade like for this game, and I think they absolutely nailed it. As I said I think the team mechanic is great, it just needed some more polish. If the options were slightly better, level traversal would have been gold. The combat, on the other hand, is fully realized. If you know what you are doing, you can massacre the more tanky enemies in seconds combining attacks from the three formations to stun, unbalance and punch the robots (except the giant ones with shields or the yellow ones those suck lol). There are a lot of interactions that are unexplained and that could have used a good tutorial akin to the one that exists in the game and that doesn't work that well. Some more praise for the traversal: the slope physics of the Adventure games is fully kept here, and the characters can use RA to fly off ramps, gain speed downhill rolling and crouch on rails to gain speed. I don't really understand the cricisim to the HA in this game, for me it is the best iteration since SA1. It gives more air control after the attack, and I think that is what puts people off, but again, it is not explained (for example, this is 100% required to know in the final section of MM). The triangle jump is really sweet, the interaction of the attacks and hitboxes is top notch, the level up system is great, really I think the whole mechanic system up to this point is the best of the series. But it has two major sins: it is unpolished, and it is unexplained. Thus, a lot of people don't engage with it, only find the glitches and bugs, and leave the game. I'd like to make a real tutorial sometime, because most of people just don't know how to play the game and that is the game's fault.
-The level design is spectacular. Really, I think this is Iizuka magnum opus before he became a bussines man. You said it, it is amazing, not only in design, but theming.
-And as you said, presentation in this game is top notch. Art design, music, graphics, voice acting (it is really silly and really heartfelt, some of the best in the series for me), the fact that you can play as so many characters is great, so much things to love here.
-I never minded about the story. It is simple, but it is fully aware that is simple and it is really well executed, courtesy of the one and only Maekawa.
-Contrary to the recent bad reputation, this game wasn't poorly received at the time. In fact, it was a sales hit and as it happened with you and me, it marked our tastes in videogames, despite all of its flaws. I think in Heroes the good design shines through the dirt, and that is what makes this game timeless, despite it not being SA1 or SA2 (SA2, I agree, absolutely one of the best games ever made). Good game design is unbeatable. Also it should be said that this game was made in the middle of the reestructuration of SEGA, the company that shaked the industry was fading, and this particular project was caught in the middle of all the chaos. Again, the fact that it came so good nontheless speaks of the mastery of the creators: Naka, Iizuka, Maekawa, Senoue, Hoshino, and all the people I must be forgetting. People that were masters at the art of making good videogames. I think that sums up why. After this, the magic separated and only remains were left. Iizuka was left alone in USA, he took the producer chair and we got... Shadow the Hedgehog. I don't think there is the need of saying anything else

Like so many Sonic games of this millennium, it's a game with tons of potential that Sega damaged by forcing a tight deadline because their quarterly earnings were gonna take a hit without another Sonic game RIGHT TF NOW.

1.) When on grind rails HOLD the B button to speed up and let go to slow down Don't tap it. (It doesn't function the same way as Sonic Adventure 2.)

2.) In the bonus stage the boost works by HOLDING B rather than tapping it despite the B button making a tapping motion. (Treat it like the modern boost games.)

3.) When Attacking as a power character on the ground you are supposed to let go of the control stick to make them attack in place. (Letting go of the control stick before you reach an edge will stop a character from falling off, but rather make them go into their balancing animation or stop completely)

4.) To lock on to an enemy when using the homing attack you have to be ABOVE the enemy for it to work.

5.) Flight Characters are OP and at levels 2 and 3 can take down most enemies in 1 hit, and are great for crowd control, and ending the enemy wave boss fights very quickly. (2-3 minutes) Focus on leveling them up first.

6.) Only ring dash when PERFECTLY aligned with the trail of rings or it wont work.

7.) If playing on PC the speed cap doesn't work and can send speed characters flying to their death in automated speed sections. AVOID going into a automated section as a speed character, or enter the section as close to the middle as possible.

These are some tips from playing for about 16 years straight to help make the game more comfortable to play.

AKSHUALLY the game does tell you the teams are the difficulty selection, provided you think to press Y on the menu which makes Omochao show up and explain the deal with whichever team you have highlighted

I really appreciate how this is an actual review instead of "let's play through the game start to finish while I ramble about game design now and then" which I see too often even these days.
Good stuff, love your channel still!
