Operation Samum (1990 - Intelligence Context): Although this operation took place before the official start of the war, Polish intelligence (including the future commander of GROM, Gromosław Czempiński) rescued American spies from Iraq following the invasion of Kuwait. This event is frequently cited in the context of Poland’s assistance to the United States.

Search for Drago. Polish dude from USA navy seals member if I'm not wrong. He talked about grom a lot. They're called by them the surgeons because they are precisely like surgeons and they have medical training (each of them) so they can work as few people team without taking doc with them. Americans prefer to work with them

Respekt dla formacji GROM . Ja nosiłem zielony beret ,jako Straż Graniczna i też jestem z tego dumny.

GROM often went where Delta Force and Ranger units refused to go. Command's order is equivalent to completing the mission without sustaining any losses.

There is a thing you may like. Did you notice a letter P with anchor as a symbol on their uniforms? This is P and W as Polska Walcząca (Fighting Poland). The symbol was used first time during WW II by Cichociemni (Dark and Silent) - a Polish special unit created along side British SAS. Both groups trained and were creating basics of special operations together. GROM when was created started to use this anchored letter P to honor those first Polish special forces from WW II and again, they started to train with SAS. Nice history loop here I think.

correction - Grom is better while can operate without any support like satelites , air strikes and rest of standard support which have Delta Force. Its a Tier one level . Last example shown when spec ops from usa landed at island without their standard support , almost died there ....those guys do not need it , they do have experinece comming from WW II when units called Silent Dark ( Cichociemni ) were dropped from planes at occupied by nazi germans territories alone and sucessfull worked behind enemy lines which result in future allied victories ( if no one did cut german support lines and did not blown up ammo and rest then today russia would bark like german sheppards - halt , halt )

At the beginning, GROM was trained by Americans, Germans, and the British. “Grom” means thunderstrike, but it is actually an acronym for Operational-Maneuver Response Group. Initially, they were formed more as an ultra-highly trained counterterrorism unit within civilian services (like the police, etc.). Only after some time were they transferred to the military, mainly because Poland doesn’t face that many terrorist threats, and they were better suited for other types of missions.

There’s quite a lot of information about them on Wikipedia because they’re kind of a national pride for us in Poland, and the guys also get a bit of credit on behalf of all the other special forces units we have. GROM is basically the equivalent of Delta Force — the elite of the elite, Tier 1, world-class.

But we also have other units:

Formoza (more like Navy SEALs),

Agat (something like the Rangers),

JWK (commandos, similar to Green Berets),

Nil (they handle logistics and communications for special operations),

PJOS (kind of like the Night Stalkers).

These comparisons to U.S. units are obviously very simplified and just meant for context, not exact equivalents — for example JWK is generally a more versatile unit then Green Berets.

There’s much less information about the other units online, even though they’re trained just as well and almost always work together. It’s just that among ordinary people, “GROM” has become almost a synonym for Special Forces.

Polish special services are actually quite active. There isn’t much public information about their operations — usually only the ones that weren’t meant to be very well hidden, or the ones they themselves talk about a bit to build their reputation. Some details about Polish operations have also been revealed by a few American special forces guys who decided to write books, if you know what I mean. 😄 But generally, they operate quietly and in secrecy.

They very often cooperate with the Americans or the British. If you want to hear some interesting information about Polish special forces, including GROM, Shawn Ryan has about a 12-minute conversation with Drago — a Navy SEAL of Polish descent — where he talks about working with Polish operators. It’s probably the most interesting video about them in English on the internet, because most of the others are basically like the one you watched — mostly just information taken from Wikipedia. 😄
