I like the little speculation that the Pale Intruder is a manifestation of Protags abusive father: he towers over him, taunts him and takes joy in being feared, and only attacks Protag if he's alone with him. The Seductive Woman is a manifestation of Protag's ex-wife. This game is so interesting and artistic.

Just a correction: the sun affects the whole world. There is a report on tv about how the equatorial belt is on fire and just touching the ground there would burn you

My favorite FEMA theory isn't that there is some grand conspiracy with them, just that they have no clue what to do but are still trying to take advantage of the apocalypse

Isn't the shroom ending an obvious hint at possible nuclear war happening? The Mycelium man tells us that "giant shrooms will cover entire cities and block the sky" (I played in russian, so sorry if there are any inconsistencies with english translation). And what's the last thing we do before we go with him? Setting a clock that suddenly appeared at our room at midnight, which is an obvious reference to the Doom Clock (for those who don't know, long story short if said clock sets at midnight = nuclear war breaks out). This is also backed by the fact that FEMA soldier tells us in the end of the game that they are planning to bomb the city.
So Mycelium ending could be an metaphor for government straight up nuking all places with high Visitor concentration, and the old man just brings us to the bomb shelter.

Quick FYI, We know our character is a human since if we run all the tests on him in a playthrough we get the achievement, "no I'm not a visitor"
Also the super visitor will kill us if we are alone, and it would seem visitors don't murder their own kind.

There’s a few vampiric undertones in the game. The Visitors are former dead humans rising from their graves, like vampires. They murder people and occasionally wear their skin (we can see a visitor from the window who’s implied to have done that), something vampires can do in old folklore.

They also ask to enter inside the house, which is reminiscent of some vampire stories were people ear their dead relatives asking to enter. There’s also the sun who’s deadly, and forces everyone to go out at night, just like vampires. The teeth and nails are a way to recognize Visitors, which used to be clues in the Middle Ages to identify a corpse that was a vampire (though the criteria are different).

It’s not foolproof obviously, you can still see yourself in the mirror for example, but the parallels are interesting.

Just nickpicking a little bit, but I have noticed if you do some ass-kissing, FEMA tends to take the visitors away instead. I tried avoiding them taking away the little neighbor girl and taking the cat lady instead. Two tries, I was aggressive in my responses to the officer and he kept taking away the little girl. The third time I tried being nice and he took the cat lady instead. This was me save scumming, so it might not be the most solid of evidence. But I do think it proves that FEMA doesn't necessarily grab humans every single time.

Another thing is the death ending where you go down that pit. There's a good chance you as the player die and are hallucinating in the dark. There's stories of people falling into pitch blackness and hallucinating to the point of being in a different time like so. its kinda dark but pokes fun at a secret true route where a prophet tells you to do wacky stuff and it all ends with you jumping in a hole

I absolutely love how the threat in this game is paranoia combined with infection tearing apart a society, and that anyone who plays this game becomes paranoid as well.

After all, we all sound just like real-life conspiracy theorists 😅

My theory is that the game is fundamentally about depression and loneliness. That’s why the parts about global warming and FEMA feel so half-baked they’re metaphors, not literal plot points.

FEMA represents the life circumstances that cause you to lose friends as life changes.
The Visitors symbolize toxic people you meet along the way the ones you eventually need to cut off.
The Pale Man is a direct metaphor for depression itself. If you’re alone, you die. He’s strong against FEMA because they represent the military and soldiers often deal with depression and PTSD.

The bugs in the ears represent a person’s inner personality or mental state. The signs are the marks on the eye meaning that things like “perfect teeth” or “red eyes” don’t define whether someone is good or bad.

The Vigilante of Hatred character is someone who cuts people off over a single red flag, forgetting that people’s personalities are complex. That’s why he says the “bug clue” is a lie. The game even mentions that the bugs infect thoughts, which fits perfectly with this interpretation.

The biggest clue is that when you survive with good people, the protagonist is still depressed, believing he’s just postponing the inevitable.

If you have Visitors in the ending, it means you let toxic people into your life, and they eventually destroy you.
The Utopia ending with the cat makes sense because depressed people often find comfort in animals they’re safe, nonjudgmental companions.
The Mushroom ending represents using drugs as a coping mechanism, and the Cult ending shows how lonely, depressed people can be drawn into cults because of their vulnerability and desire for belonging.

Im pretty sure in multiple endings the visitors do kill you, not to mention the pale man also kills you and is open about the fact that he wants to do so

4:27 small correction, FEMA is an existing government agency in the US, despite the game changing between Russian and American (in the russian version FEMA is called EMERCOM, that is from Russia, and the game is originally russian) both agencies are government made to deal with disasters, so its plausible that another government agency made it and FEMA/EMERCOM are just dealing with it while knowing the truth, FEMA is probably not the one behind it.
