The Depths being an inverted Hyrule is actually a cool thing to me. Not only is it a clever dev shortcut, it also has gameplay ramifications. Since The Depths are basically pitch black before you activate lightroots, the same weenie-based exploration can't take place as it does in the overworld. You can't pick out interesting things from a distance and orient yourself easily by major landmarks. Instead the map allows you to consider what locations may have interesting things there, allowing you to determine beforehand where you want to go. Too bad that the actual content was sorely lacking though.

I don't know if there is enough information to conclude that the Depths as such were originally planned to be DLC, but it does seem clear that they were a relatively late addition to the game, and that the form they ultimately took would have subsumed any planned DLC.

I actually was thinking something similar: that the DLC was just put in the base game and the price was raised. Also another clue is the extra heart from the great plateau’s death quest being like the champions ballad’s extra heart.

compelling arguments! I do remember around the time of TOTK's release there were at least rumors that a lot of the game started out as DLC ideas (i think there may have been an official source related, but can't recall off the top of my head). I am curious about your thoughts on how the Korok Forest would've worked had the depths not been in the main game or the inclusion of sundelions in the tear memory of Sonia's grave if those were just added for the depths.

In the hypothetical scenario where the depths would've been released as DLC, I wonder whether they would've had the time to add more to fill in all the empty space or if it would've had even less to do since many aspects of it would instead be found above ground

My first thought is that there are 20 Sage’s Will chests and all of them are in the sky, and the Sage’s Will mechanic also seems tacked-on.

If those chests had originally been battery upgrades, the entire zonaite grinding loop could’ve been avoided.

The sky islands also make a lot more sense thematically as the source of battery upgrades.

Wow! you've convinced me. I can't say that I was disappointed with the depths when I played totk on release, I was so excited for the game I didn't really think critically about it. But now that youve presented me with several points such as the single biome used throughout, only one new depths-specific mob, and only two main story reasons to go down there, this theory makes sense. If this is true, t's unfortunate that the devs decided to rush an integration of the planned dlc rather than flesh out the content to release later- whether that meant delaying the release of the game a year or two more or simply releasing the content as a dlc.

For the zonia charge items, I wonder if there's any signs to them being originally one item in the files. Because in situation like those the oldest/original file might have had a completely different naming convention than newer items in development.
