Great man. I'm glad they gave him at least $8 million for his troubles.

The company I worked for maintained the avionics from Laker's fleet. He always paid his bills on time.

Freddie Laker helped my Brother in Law to get into aviation, when he was at Southend Airport.

My experience on a Laker Dc10 was utter hell. Back in '81 i was a child and was travelling on one on a family holiday. My aunt had never flown before and was terrified of the idea of flying. She took one look at our aircraft from the departure lounge and said '"that's not not a DC10 is it?" "No" said my dad "it's a Tristar"<br>We boarded the aircraft and by this point she was already shaking with fear. My dad had to quickly remove the safety instructions from the seat back because it had Dc10 printed on it. Anyway, the aircraft took off, she's sitting in her seat almost crapping herself with my dad having to constantly reassure her - and then the captain came on to make an announcement once we'd reached cruising height and said at the end of it 'Thank you for flying Laker airlines DC10' <br>That was it. She went mental. Absolutely mental. She screamed so hysterically for the entire 4 hour flight to the point that i'm surprised that everyone on that aircraft did not end up burst ear drums. It was so embarrassing. Nothing and nobody could calm her. Part of me hoped a hole would open up and the plane would go down just to escape the humiliation. Had that had happened today they would have probably diverted.

I flew Laker in the late 70’s. 199.00, quid return. They lost my bag, but it wasn’t all bad. I had a two day stay in NY, before flying on to a photo fair exhibition in Chicago. I had a phone call when I was in Chicago telling me that they found my bag, but I was already returning to NY!<br><br>I was only staying for one night before returning to the UK! To cut a long story short, I got a call at work 11, days later that they found my bag and would deliver it to my workplace later that day. I got my bag back completely intact, even though it was not even locked. I don’t suppose that would happen nowadays. So, ten out of ten for real customer service.

My uncle was a pilot for Laker back in the day. He was the instigator for cheap holiday travel. My uncle said the other airlines tried every trick in the book to shut him down. RIP uncle Tony.
