  I worked on the Comet 2  fleet in the R.A.F. at Lyneham in the late 1950s. Brilliant aircraft.

  The Comet 4 was a lovely piece of kit to travel on back in the day. I  think Dan Air cornered the market after they were retired by BEA and ended up with about 50. Happy memories!

  This is good. My father worked on the Comet from the beginning (drawing office) with a "sabbatical" in the early 50s. Left De Havilland 1957 finally for Guernsey and something completely different. Never spoke much about it.

  PanAm had a large international advertising campaign to announce the first transatlantic jet passenger flight by Boeing 707. Unannounced BOAC beat that by less than a week with the Comet 4.<br>They placed the PanAm ad with the Comet flying through it. I kept the full page but over time I lost it

  &quot;Ground stall&quot; under this condition the plane simply didn&apos;t have enough thrust to accelerate to a higher airspeed that would allow it to get airborne? &nbsp;While a modern plane if encountered this situation can simply power its way to higher speed and fight its way out of it ?<br> &nbsp;Could the crew of a &quot;ground stalled&quot; Comet get the nosewheel down back on the tarmac and accelerate to higher speed and then rotate again for a successful liftoff ?

  The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, IL has a Boeing 727 suspended from a second story balcony. &nbsp;The airplane fuselage is cut for entry and you can see the aircraft skin. &nbsp;I noticed the skin generally had one thickness, by eye 1/32&quot; or 1mm. &nbsp;However there was a band of thicker material along the window line, again by eye 1/16&quot; or 1.5mm. &nbsp;It struck me that this was a lesson from the Comet, bought with human life. &nbsp;So often we are protected from danger by those that went before us who paid a heavy cost for the lesson.
