This is a Victorian perfume bottle, carried by "ladies" of the era to counter the noxious smells of any large city. The cotton in the bottle kept the perfume from spilling out during use; it was carried on a chair around the neck or wrist. The "stone" is either abalone or mother of pearl. The metal "casement" was usually made out of silver, or silver plate. This article is probably in the range of 135-150 years old.

Sir, as a goldsmith may I offer you some advice for working with metal? Since this metal had a blue green patina we know that it had a lot of copper in it. It could have been either gold or silver plated copper, or brass. The gallery wire (what the decorative metal with all the prongs is called) is made by an industrial process we know that it is likely from the mid 1800s onward, and most likely brass - which is what it turned out to be. So when opening jump rings, the rings which were holding the chain onto the bottle, don't open them like a purse, you want to grasp each end in chain nose pliers and bypass the ends, side to side. Opening the jump rings the way you did, significantly weakens them and can cause them to break easily in the future. Also when you were lifting the decorative features off the mother of pearl, you pulled them up to a 90 degree angle. Again, that will significantly weaken them, and could cause them to break right there. You only need to lift them just enough to slide the side pieces out from under them. And lastly, instead of sandblasting the surface of the metal which texturizes it, you only need to put it into a mild acid (we call it pickle in the industry), something like citric acid to remove the copper oxides. It would have a soft matte appearance after being in the pickle. If you aren't getting all the copper oxides removed, you can heat the metal slightly before putting it in the acid, or heat the acid slightly and put the metal into it. After taking the metal out of the pickle, you can then proceed to polishing it. A soft linen buff would get into the low spots in the metal. Or you can use these radial bristle disks made by 3M to get into tight spots. Anyway, just my two cents on how I would have done this with my skill set. https://www.amazon.com/Swpeet-Polishing-Assortment-Finishing-Deburring/dp/B07LD9LJ2C/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=307ZA6GRTCLMH&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.0B2jcTH6Tr_T50C6ANUIfR8eI1QxI7awhBaIE8vHYrBoF79FYbzsU7VsHsNdx7drOE5cAzSBF0z_LYwLwpA2z7S0DsMXTikQDbqePRKbbqPvsx9XSIvcAb-6ExHqqTm4-CF0GMimEk5tz08FUCjskTKuaeUCZvM4P1hGxm55Zosii-pLG5OBvGjkYQIGUNFFY46hD6O-91NVNsLRgD3-iIJKmOS-nvlHgwwsBxu9VUY.1NlJZbSuTBpN0oum36fFAfzAnxGlpLzUSy5b_WJo3NE&dib_tag=se&keywords=3m+radial+bristle+discs&qid=1743791643&sprefix=3m+radial+%2Caps%2C115&sr=8-2-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1

I have this perfume bottle, but it was used for smelling salts, not perfume. I bought it about 10 years ago from a lady sorting out her grandma's house. I paid £10. She wouldn't take any more, so, I went and bought £80 worth of dog and cat food and donated it to an animal shelter in her name.

Always 10/10 work! I wish they still made these bottles. So much prettier than the boring ones we have today.

This perfume flask is 20th c, anywhere from 1910’s - 1950’s. The metal is brass with a higher concentration of copper. If it was constructed in the early 20th c, then I think it could have been made in America. If it was constructed in the late 1940’s - 1950’s, it was made in Japan for export. The shell is mother of pearl from the South Pacific. The irregularities of the interior glass vessel support early 20th c America or post WWII Japan. It was mass produced, no hand chasing or hand engraving support the dates of its manufacture and country of origin. Your restoration is EXCELLENT and you deserve a 12 out of 10. 👍👍👍😊 Thank you and please continue your work, it’s a dying profession/art. ❤
