Saw Buddy and Louie together in 1978. Both bands kick ass then Buddy and Louie's bands played Groovin Hard then the drum battle. WOW! What a night!!!!!

"Technical" being the key word when describing Buddy. The greatest rudiment player in history.

I was 9 years old, breathing down Louis Bellson’s neck during a concert. He looked at me and handed me a stick to play the high hat. Afterwards, he handed me his sticks (one with a broken tip). I still have them 60 years later, mounted in a frame against black velvet.

I got to see Buddy Rich live in college. In fact I skipped an evening vertebrate zoology test telling my professor that I had a schedule conflict. Buddy impressed me the most with all his subtleties and dynamic range. All my albums recorded the flash and thunder, but he could play incredibly softly and sensitively too. <br>I got to see and meet Louie Bellson at a clinic later I never met anyone who loved and enjoyed playing drums like he did. He demonstrated numerous technics and every once in a while just was caught up in the enjoyment of playing and seemed briefly to be totally absorbed in what he was playing while wearing a big smile. Such a gracious man too. I think Buddy was the best, but Louie was my favorite.

Buddy used to practice with Joe Morello, who also encouraged him to step out on his own. I think there was a mutual admiration there between probably the two greatest drummers of the 20th century

Not surprised Louie Bellson was on the list. I saw both Rich and Bellson live with their bands several times, and one time saw them both at the same concert, with the obligatory drum battle at the end. They were both amazing.

Great contribution. This paints Buddy in a new light, even for old fans like me. I never heard of half of these guys. It's good to know how much Buddy appreciated others' playing, even though much less technically-impressive of course.

Spent a weekend with Mr Bellson back in 95 @ an Ellington festival as his “tech” ……still one of my fondest drumming memories. He was so down to earth. I think he was in his mid 70’s, but still amazing behind that double bass Slingerland kit. Never forget it!

Great video. Nice picks for inspirational drummers. Met with Buddy several times at his gigs in Southern California. Was friendly, always eager to sign his autograph, and willing to answer questions. The set of drums he played at his last concert is on display at the Professional Drum Shop in Hollywood, California. The set actually belongs to Stan Keyawa, one of the owners of the Professional Drum Shop.

Where was the mention of the great Max Roach? Buddy, loved Max's playing style and he and Buddy were involved in many "Drum Off's" and respected each others drumming abilities immensely.
