What do you think really caused the Salem Witch Trials?

I’m a decedent of Mary Bradbury (found guilty but escaped from prison) and Roger Conant (founder of Salem), and love that yall are speaking the truth of the trials and not the “excitement” of witches in Salem. In my house Mary was only framed as the baddass she was and we even have her testimony framed. Much love🖤🖤🖤

The scariest thing about modern day Salem Massachusetts is the lack of public restrooms.

It’s so cool seeing how many comments are about being related to the convicted witches. I’m a direct descendant of Susannah Martin; extra crazy bc before I knew that, I played Sarah Goode in The Crucible in high school. She was hanged alongside Susannah July 19, 1692. Joke’s on the Salem court, her 14 times great-granddaughter is an unmarried, bisexual pagan feminist with a black cat and a snake LMAO

A non-American listener here. I knew of Salem witch trials of course, especially in the context of misogyny and patriarchy prevailing in those times, but this episode gave me such deep insights into what actually happened, including things I never knew about. Thank you. Loved the episode!

Born and raised just outside of Salem & it’s so true, if you grow up in MA (specifically the north shore like I did) so much of your elementary school experiences, field trips, etc. involve learning about the Witch Trials and pilgrims in general. There’s actually a full blown “living museum” in Salem (idk if this was mentioned later so sorry if repeating info!) that’s essentially them trying to recreate “pioneer life” - save for the Native g*nocide of course

I’m latina and we crack eggs into water after passing it all over our bodies and we read the egg whites and also do it so that the egg will take any sickness or anything bad from us

I swear the weird sexual stuff is because they were SO stifled they just had to talk about sex somehow 😭

Growing up in New England it’s really interesting to see how much the witch trials formed our collective folklore. We were all taught about the trials in school year after year but the idea of witches in the woods and ghosts and everything is something that was also passed down. New England Halloween hits different because it’s as if you can FEEL just how spooky the land is.

Chronic THT listener here! Subscribed and listening immediately because I am a direct descendant of one of the “witches” hung at the trials. My grandfather was also killed for suspicions of witchcraft

They should’ve said that accusing a witch put the accusers name in the “Devil’s book”

I always have trouble with the mass-hysteria explanation in a lot of cases because it's not always clear where it comes from but with the witch trials you can very clearly point to just how deep their religious zealousness goes. 💜
