I don’t know if anyone has already commented this, but I had an Uber driver tell me that if I ever felt unsafe in an Uber vehicle that you can actually hit record on the app and it will record all the audio the whole time you’re in the car. It also shows up on the drivers end too so they know that they’re being recorded. Needless to say that guy was super nice and helpful and got a very good tip.

My biggest ‘trust my gut’ moment was back in 2015 when I was driving from Minneapolis to Duluth at maybe 3am, in the winter. I ended up getting a flat tire and was on the side of the road in my car with the flashers on. This road was pretty dark bc there weren’t houses or buildings around, just trees. With it being so early not many cars were on the road so I noticed when one went by. And one that had passed me turned around. This guy pulled up next to my car, so I rolled my window down just slightly. He said he’d be happy to change my tire since his kids told him he “needed to turn around to help the lady.” I told him no, since I was waiting for someone from a roadside service to come help. He drove off and I noticed there were no kids in the car, only him. Later on I heard about a guy who was attacking and raping women in roughly the same area. I have no idea if it was the same guy, but I’m glad I trusted my instincts.

I heard this story from a woman that was walking by herself and a man was following her. When he caught up with her and grabbed her arm she pulled around holding her phone up saying he was live streaming. She pretended to talk to her audience about this guy following her and call for help. He ran off. I thought that was so smart. A trick to keep in the back of your mind.

Like the meme about someone picking up a hitchhiker. Then the hitchhiker asks you’re not worried I’m a serial killer? The driver says, no. What are the odds there are two serial killers in one car and laughs.

my mom's friend was bringing groceries into her apartment and had the door still open when she was young, a man walked by and said hello, she said hello back but she felt weird about him, he asked if she needed help and she declined, he lingered in the doorway and he asked "are you alone?" and she said "no, my husband is here" and pretended to call him and the man said something like "oh ok, have a good day" and walked off. A few weeks later, she was watching the news and they talked about a caught serial killer, ted Bundy, and she fainted, seeing the face of man that had creeped her out in her doorway.

Regarding the point of faking a telephone call to feel safer. In Germany, we do have services that you can call should you feel unsafe while you're out late at night and on your way home. So you have real people that you can talk to until you reach your destination. It could be worth looking into whether such services are also available in your country/area.

I am a Lyft driver....I now ask the person's name and show them my phone that shows their picture, after they answer. I have almost given 2 rides to people after saying "Lyft for Aubrey" and they say "Yeah, that's me". I look at their picture and say "Who ordered the Lyft, because this picture ain't you! They got pissed and got out Thank God!

A long time ago, I was driving home early in the morning from a friend's house. I pulled down a side road when a man came running out of the woods and jumped in front of my car, so I had to stop. Blood and mud were running down his face, and he was yelling, "Help me." He ran around the car and started trying my door handles to get in. I opened the window a crack and said, "I can't let you in, but I will call the cops." He kept yelling no, but I pulled out the phone, dialed the cops, and all of a sudden he ran away back into the woods. I definitely dodged a shady situation.

Just at the part after the this story, you guys are saying you aren’t aware of any real cases like that. Samantha Josephson was abducted sexual assaulted & murdered by a man posing as an uber driver. Horrible case. Her parents started the what’s my name foundation in her honour.

It's heartbreaking to me how many different ways the woman in the fake Uber driver story feels that she needs to blame herself for someone else's criminal intent.

Canadian here, the case of Tim McLean is still felt here. It caused a shock wave through the country. It was devastating and continues to be for Tim’s family. The public keeps an eye on his killer, same with Karla Holmolka.
