What Happened to PvP in Dune Awakening?

The problem at the beginning was that pve and pvp players were forced to play on the same servers. Funcom decided to try something different that didn't work. For an example Ark is famous for it's pvp BUT the majority of the ppl I have met over the years IRL that play Ark are PVErs. Funcom decided to not have designated pvp and pve servers as well as single player which drove away a huge portion of the player base. Add to the fact that we could lose our vehicles permanently and that many PVPers acted like godless barbarians to anyone and everyone really hurt the majority of the player base. Like for real blowing ppl up when they were just compacting some spice is degenerate behavior. So Funcom reacted to what made more ppl happy which punished the pvp community and honestly they earned it. I have had fun fighting ppl and having dogfights in the DD but the absolute lack of civility is what caused the death of pvp. Now I totally agree that combat needs a major rework and an organized form of pvp would be great but all the griping from the PVPers is half Funcom's fault but also half the pvp community's fault.

the main problem was not even the part of "~40 hours pve, suddenly pvp required", it was the toxic griefing! those who just rushed the game to be the first with orni and missiles did everything they could just to deny the others progression as well so they can keep the upper hand. the playerbase made it all toxic as hell! "oh, you just reached DD with your slow orni? let me set you back serveral hours by being a scumbag" simply drove people away from the game
every single time i was griefed, i tried to ask for a fighting chance.... guess how many times they agreed and didnt spam me down with thousands of rockets. quick hint: not a single person in over 60 attempts..........

It would be so cool if they do something with guild Vs guild and have ground vehicle warfare dogfights and boots on ground all separate and like a tournament to win. This game got so much potential I just hope they listen to players like you and I.

Unrestrained PvPvE was a disastrous idea from the start, and Funcom had been warned. They had the numbers from Conan (90% of their players on PvE server and 10% on PvP servers).

But no, Joel Bylos wanted his Feed Sheep to Hyena style game. Even when the beta testers warned them. Even when they were warned about BattleEye being incapable of stopping cheaters.

What Dune Awakening should have had was some full dedicated PvP areas. That could have been full Arena where players could have fought 1vs1, 3vs3, or 5vs5. Full in line with the kind of Arena you read in the book.

Then they could have had some kind of House vs House area for larger fights, involving things like defending/attacking some Harvesting operation and have rewards depending on the results of the battle.

They could have had some assault/defence of Stronghold.

But more important, they should have probably dropped the idea of 'loss to PvP'. As clearly that kind of PvP only attract a small amount of players and it clearly also attract the worst kind (griefers, cheaters and exploiters).
Many games have clearly provided some very fun PvP kind of games over the years, and (UN)Funcom could have just used something that work. But Joel Bylos and his lead team were just too stubborn and decided to go on a collision course not with 1 iceberg, but a whole collection of it. Be it first by lying to players about the game being PvP ALWAYS OPTIONNAL (he lied on stream about it to insure a larger sale at launch). And they also lied on Steam page (they removed that PvP Always Optional description when they got the 2025 September DLC out).

I don't know in what world those guys were thinking they were living, as they clearly though that forcing players to do something they don't want would be successful. But when 90% of your playerbase is PvE and is not interested at all in PvP, and you hide all the good schematics of Tiers 5 and tiers 6 in PvP areas, you are bound to seriously sink your ship. As the PvP disaster was not only in the Deep Desert. But it was also in how they designed the whole mess in Hagga. Having schematics hidden in PvP areas, where chest had a timer and only 1 person could loot them. What a great magnificent design... And do I need to speak about how they decided that 5 seconds was too short to get out of PvP and extended the timer to 30 seconds. Making those run in Hagga PvP areas even more risky, and even more sh*tty when you were turned into PvP just from flying too 'close' to those crappy places that littered the whole Hagga map... And not speaking about those shitty barely visible areas in the Deep desert where you could be turned in 5 seconds and had to escape for 30 seconds just because you had no way to see the markers telling where the pvp areas was.

Funcom really made the worst kind of decision. First the game needed a whole year more in development just from the massive amount of bugs and other exploits. The game needed a full separation of PvP and PvE from the start, and the game needed to have some competent User Interface developers at Funcom (something they still don't have from how bad the User Interface is in the game.)

And I say that as a player who had waited more than 30 years to see a Dune Game after having so much fun on Dune 1 and 2 on Amiga so long ago. I hate that they messed up so badly.

And sorry, but no, just from seeing the amount of players who left when they finally discovered they would be forced to go in PvP to get material, and how many were griefed until leaving in Hagga already, not 'that' many players were interested in PvP among the first waves of players. Yes there were some, and those were very visible with all the videos. But way more players where just wanting to experience the Dune vibe in a survival game, not having to be constantly checking over their shoulder and not be sure there base would still be there when they connected after seeing how some exploiters abused the NPC to destroy the land claims.

One part I don’t hear people talking about is in the deep desert resources were never scares enough to warrant a genuine fight, there was enough resources for everyone. So people fight in the deep desert where fighting just to fight. Which is fun for some but not all. Actually implementing faction v faction and utilizing those control points from the earlier versions of the deep desert could’ve really give new life to dunes PvP

From what I've read people told them the DD was a terrible idea in the closed beta and they didn't listen. Guess Joel's vision didn't work out for him.

A lot of lessons they finally started learning in Conan seemed to be thrown out the window with Dune and made the same mistakes. And then they didn't even commit to faction v faction stuff, to point where I've seen a fair few didn't bother with Landsraad because their guilds were mixed faction anyway.

I hope they add an arena eventually!!it makes sense just thinking about the scene where feyd had to battle multiple people because of baron. I honestly think they put off PvP love because of the delivery of the console drop which I think for sure was on top of the list of things to get done right and the polar cap DLC before or during the release of part3

For the solo dd experience, I'd say people who are less confident in pvp are currently building experience and testing stuff out hoping to join pvp servers again once they are well-versed at a later date. Remember, you said it: we have two main types of players here: PvP and non-PvP. This is heavily due to the relentless gap in skill and numbers that solo explorers face early in their grind. It's a player-controlled atmosphere so I don't know exactly how much will change in the future. Most people nowadays commonly play a game when it drops until the next shiny new title comes out; then it looks like the game flopped, but in reality the masses never stay still for too long. This just becomes more prominent; then the players loop around and tank the game for anyone who still enjoys it. This seems to be a common pattern in recent years.

They should have just made PVP servers period, so you could have a PVP character and then your PVE character on another servers. So you could bounce back and forth for when you feel like doing either or that day…

The change is what brought me back.
As a solo player my only PvP experience was groups of 3+ people who didn’t play solo running around targeting solo players.

It was basically two different games forcing them to play together. So the group players won (not in game. They won ownership of the game)

The main issue overall has always been that the pvp playerbase is significantly smaller to the point that with those players alone this game would have shut down very shortly after launch. Pve players are what makes these games money and a lot of them enjoy dabbling in pvp here and there.
