Going to EDM shows & festivals helps me a lot with this. Being surrounded by accepting, loving, kind people & feeling accepted for just being who I am is like exposure therapy for me.

Two things I'd like to add to this -

1. If you're in a really fragile mental health situation, it'll be better to do this while you have a safe space to retreat to, specifically maybe a mental health professional, if you can access it.

2. When you start putting yourself out there, it actually reveals to you which of the people in your life are truely rooting for you and which of them are wastes of space that you'd rather give to yourself and your emotions, ALL of them. Remember fear is a prerequisite for bravery and an innate part of being human.

Great video. Good luck ❤

I am a black woman from Africa and I moved to Europe to pursue my studies. I garner attention on a regular basis since I am usually in predominantly white and male spaces, because of my job, my course and my interests. So as someone who was already hyperaware and hypervigilant, these experiences have made me even more so. I'm always in my head ruminating, fixing, adjusting, performing, shrinking, playing it safe, lest I conform to a preconceived notion, and so I don't stand out anymore than I already do.

At the same time I want to feel like I belong, because I know I deserve to be in these spaces. At the same time I need to understand it's mostly in my head and separate my identity from any form of performance that would make me pallatable. I'm aware, but sometimes it gets very difficult to keep reminding myself to take up space.

Yes in Eastern Europe it’s very common thing for children to be taught about shame, guilt and other people’s opinion

If the weak will never hear me,
and the strong needn't be told,
it is only to those I must speak,
who are neither meek nor bold.

2:06 I was the child of a pastor, and I was reprimanded for minor things every child does. “Everyone is watching you. You’re the example. Do you want to eat? Well you need to behave or I’ll get fired.” I was homeschooled too which, for a kid who already had social anxiety, made self isolation a lot easier. I’m 25. While I have accomplished things (I’ve worked many different jobs, I dated guys, I’ve travelled a lot, I have a degree) my level of general social skills and life experience seems to be lower than other people around me. I’ve been told over and over that I’m beautiful but I feel insecure and don’t have as many pictures of myself as I’d like. I don’t really have any friends either and I’ve spent most of my birthdays alone. I feel very lonely and i feel sorry for my younger self who wanted friends but couldn’t make them, who was always compared to other kids, who was told I had a spotlight on me. I am on meds now and I’m trying to talk to more people even if it’s just the barista making my coffee, and remind myself it’s okay, it’s not the end of the world if they don’t like me.

Subscribed ❤️ this is something that I have been dealing with my entire life as far as I can remember due to brutal bullying. It makes it difficult to absorb and take in the love that is given to you when it is the negativity and hurtful people that stand out. I only recently realized how much it affects me in holding myself back and keeping myself invisible.. Thank you for this.
