I am turning 70 next month and I was diagnosed 11 years ago. I am a woman and I was always disruptive in class and was always put in the back row. I always paid my bills. I got bored vert easy and went through boyfriends. I am up front with everyone that I meet. I was in school in the 60s and labeled a brat, Stupid and odd.I did make it to 70. I volunteer in Oncology and I shine. I know my ups and downs. I take concerta and Effexor and it helps. I stay clear of conflict and people who stress me. 😊

I can totally relate to staying at work until the custodians come in. I taught middle school and would stay most evenings until 7 or 8 pm. Other teachers chided me, "If you're working harder than the students, you're doing it wrong." Yeah. But I can't do it with less. :(

The "it might be them, not you" made me cry for the little innocent unknowing soul i once was, who had always thought something was wrong with me. That i was to blame.
I needed to change.

Now i know it was also a lack of understanding, lack of knowledge and perhaps even a lack of adults willing to change for the best of their child.

My niece has recently been diagnosed as ADD and the first thing i asked the counselor; "What can we do to support her and make her life easier".

I don't want her to go through the same s* that so many children like myself go through. No more dumb, lazy, crazy, dramatic accusations on top of feeling simply to much and even not wanted.
My diagnosis has not been official yet, but i will do everything in my power to help her walk a path with less hurdles and more understanding and support.

Several aspects I don’t hear about: 1. Part of perfectionism is what I call “deer in headlights”, if I know something backwards and forwards I run less risk of my brain freezing up so I know nothing. 2 Fear of resting because I might never get back to finish the job. 3. Engaging three sensory systems as a way of being able to listen. For example I took amazing notes in class but when asked to put down my pencil and just listen I couldn’t remember a thing. Now I use a coloring book to help focus on what is being said.

I very much appreciate the time stamps, that allow me to easily replay the parts that I miss when I am thinking about the part before.

"In work they don't want to be seen as different so they go along even in ways where it may not work for their unique learning style or their unique brain, so spending lots of hours after work trying to process everything and do the work because they couldn't focus during work or re teach it to themselves. "
I had to pause the video and write down this quote because it reflects my reality so well I'll probably use it to explain my experience to others.

31:45 ADHD meds actually work quickly (you know if one is right, wrong, or ok unlike antidepressants) but they only get you half way to "normalcy". The SLOW part is tuning habits, diet, accomodations which honestly as an older adult is taking years.

Revelation (to me at least): re masking on a first date. I dont mask well as an adult but initial interviews often go well because of dopamine. Im dressed up, studied up, freshly medicated and caffeinated. The rest of the relationship slides downhill from there. 😂

They put my mom on the little yellow pill to help her with her brain that wouldn’t shut off back in the 70’s! I am my mother’s daughter, and she was my savour! She passed away at 67 and I was 27. I’m now, 59. Wow, wound right up after doing this for 59 years without knowing!! It’s been with me forever! Age of 3 I can remember…. ❤ couldn’t figure out why no one remembered anything from their childhood! Well they do, just I have details 🤪
