Ah problem with the 20 mins pretend someone's coming over clean up is now I have hidden bags of random stuff in another room which will take ages to sort out another day

I cook or clean whilst ‘listening’ to a podcast like yours. It stops me from getting distracted by something else, has a preset time frame, and I get the added bonus of learning something interesting at the same time.

I have pretty severe ADHD, and deep cleaning planned marathons is the only thing that works for me in terms of keeping my flat clean. When I was in school, it was the same thing. I could never do a little bit of an assignment at a time; I had to write the outline, rough and final drafts to an essay assignment all at once or it wouldn‘t get done. I graduated with the highest honors. The very thought of doing things a little bit at a time instead of all at once is so anxiety-inducing for me I can’t bear it. Our brains are so mysteriously unique and complex.

It is humanly impossible for me to have both the dishes and laundry completely finished at the same time. My executive function is declining as I get older. I'm tired of telling myself what to do, and I'm tired of myself telling me what to do. There are no adults here!

Nothing motivates me to clean more than knowing that someone is coming over. Our kitchen island tends to be the catch-all for anything that doesn't have a home. It's very hard for me to clean and stay focused on the task I started because I am easily distracted if I start walking into other rooms. Unlike my husband, he also had ADHD, but he's the laser-focused type, and he can take 10 minutes and get more accomplished when he's motivated. It takes me 10 minutes to figure out a plan of action.

When cooking, I do clean as I go, and that may be from my years of working as a Baker/Cake Decorator and having to keep my prep area clean. It's a habit. Thank you for talking about body doubling. It explains why my husband (unknowingly) wants me around when he's cooking, or we have to go out shopping/running errands. I find those tasks boring and would rather not take part, but I know I understand and will make an effort to support him.

We are both undiagnosed with ADHD and opposite in most of our quirks. I recognize it; he is skeptical and slowly coming around. My Executive Dysfunction is something I am very aware of, whereas my husband doesn't seem to be affected.
