What if Jon Snow Became a Hedge Knight Instead of Joining The Night's Watch

The crisp morning breeze whispers in Jon's ear as the Bastard of Winterfell rides out of the gates. He didn't want to join the King's Party, instead he'd decided to leave a few days before. Catelyn's eyes when he'd said goodbye to Bran had terrified him and what she'd said to him… It should have been you. Those still rang in his ears. He'd thought about becoming a member of the Night's Watch, but after hearing Tyrion and Jaime talk about the black brothers as well as Benjen telling him that it wouldn't be wise, Jon would take a different road. When he'd told his father, Ned's eyebrows had risen, but he'd voiced no objection to Jon going off and becoming a Hedge Knight. Ned: Jon, it's time for you to make your own decisions. It's not the path I would have expected you to take, but there's a great deal of good that someone like you can do out in the wider world. People seem to think that it is through power or force that positive change is made, but I've found that small acts of kindness and honor and respect are where the greatest change comes. Jon: I'll keep that in mind, Father. I won't dishonor you. Ned: I know you won't. Be safe out there, Jon. It's a dangerous business setting off on your own, you step out onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, you never know where you'll be swept off to. And so the bastard became a hedge knight. So, now here he was. Riding down toward the south with only his sword, a pack, his horse, Ghost, and a coin purse. With no baggage train or wheelhouse, Jon quickly outpaces the king's party to moat Caitlin. On his first night south of the neck, it starts raining. As he looks around for shelter, Jon hears the sounds of a wolf calling in the distance. Ghost looks up and lets his tongue loll out of his mouth. For a moment, Jon is worried about having to deal with a pack, then the direwolf comes into view. Jon immediately recognizes Nymeria and offers his hand toward the wolf. Eagerly, Nymeria bounds over to Jon and tackles him to the ground, licking his face. Chuckling, Jon starts mussing her fur like he would Arya. Abruptly, Nymeria runs backward to a figure on a horse. Jon immediately identifies it as Arya. Jon: What in seven hells are you doing here? What happened to your hair? Did you cut it with a knife? Arya: You're going off to be a knight, and knights need squires. So, I stole a horse, left a note, and rode after you. C'mon, it'll be an adventure. The two of us traveling the Seven Kingdoms with our swords at our sides. Jon: (laughing) All right all right. Well, if you're going to join me and Ghost, then you'll have to help me with my equipment. It'll probably be best to claim you're a boy. Smiling, Arya gives Jon a hug. Grinning despite himself, Jon pulls up his cloak and tries to find somewhere to shelter in for the night. After he's unable to find a cave, they start looking for a tree that will provide something approaching good cover. It takes almost an hour, and by that point, both of them are soaked through to the bone, but Nymeria does find a hedge for them to sleep under. After they put their cloaks over the hedge, Jon puts his arms around his sister as she cuddles up to him. The next morning, Jon and Arya wake up with a horrible ache in his back and a chill in his bones. Shivering, Jon stiffly rolls out from under the hedge and tries to stand up. It's not terribly successful, and it actually takes him a few tries. Jon: What are you laughing at? Arya: (laughing in wheezes) You look (wheeze) like an old man trying to (wheeze) get up after too long in a comfy chair. Jon: Just you wait, you'll be feeling the exact same thing. Arya is about to protest, but then she tries to get up and feels the exact same numbness. Muttering curses that would have made her septa go red with anger, Arya lets Jon help her to her feet. Shaking from the cold, Jon and Arya quickly dry out and start riding south. When the two of them get to Fairmarket, Jon offers to help with whatever he can in order to get a night's sleep. The steward employs them as hunters. With Ghost's help, he and Arya are able to track down a pair of deer and bring them back. #gameofthrones #gameofthroneswhatif #whatif
