My mother also presents herself as a victim (covert narcissist) - despite the fact that she is the one with the most financial resources (has been all my life)! Neither my dad nor me are as secure financially - far from it. When I try to be financially independent, she protests and wants me to depend on her for money. This is nuts! And then I hear her tell her 'friend' (because she doesn't have real friends) that I am exploiting her for money. Crazy people.

They never change. They get worse as they age. If you physically saved their life, they would say..".that never happened "!
How the hell can a person be so messed up in their heads!?

"Narcissists are Eveywhere!" I didn't believe it until a few years in, educating myself. I feel fortunate.
The unaware can get trapped for a lifetime.
I feel so lucky.

There are a few people who are rare gems. The narc will tell them the smear of you, the delusional story. These gems say, wait, this story doesn't fit what I know of it's target. They either dismiss the story, or come to the target to ask about the story.
It is RARE, but wonderful. That is a true friend.

it was difficult to realise they are liars. 65years waiting for some common ground.
in my delusion i thought they could be normal. best part is, i am the same loving person.
no contact is only option. something tells me i was in their lives for a reason.

Dear Dan. I am a boomer. But have had to defend myself Against these narcissists most of my life. 25 yrs ago i was dealing w/ a world class Narc - my x mother in law - who did the behaviors u r talking about. Because i did Not bow down to her Narc behaviors - she manipulated & influenced her son - my x - against me. Too bad for me that the Narc word & meaning - openly became well known recently.

They must care so little about others to so casually and perpetually offload their misery on them. Treated just as a means to an end. Misery tampons to be re-inserted at will.

The more I reflect, the more I experience, the more I conclude that contact minimisation is always the best or only strategy. The only winning move to leave the game.

They're the most exhausting, tiresome, bitter and miserable kind of people you'd ever meet, They're energy vampires, who suck every ounce energy out of you.. We were exactly in your position having to take care of my aging and sickly grandiose narc father-in-law for nearly a decade. His tactic for control if he didn't get his way was his will. 'You're out of the will!' Every son has been out of the will multiple times over their lifetimes. It unfortunately stuck that way for one of the brothers. They were estranged for years and by the time they made up (last 2 months of his life), it was too late! And now the brother is bitter, even though he managed to escape and got to do absolutely nothing for his father. He was only 15 minutes away.

My husband is mostly the scapegoat of the family and was the only one who did anything/everything for his father when he was sick. We also think his father manipulated him into thinking he was far sicker than he was at the beginning. Which led us to moving in with him to take care of him, way sooner than necessary. He told my husband that he needed him there, but told others we were mooching off him. Typical. Yet you're out of the will if you don't comply. Manipulative assholes.

What's weird is that every son got a taste of playing every role in the narc's fucked up family hierachy.. golden child and scapegoat would switch on any given day. But that's also because he took great pleasure in pitting the brothers against each other with jealousy so they end up hating each other.

He'd talk shit behind everybody's backs then sit back and watch with glee how things devolved into chaos. Major shit stirrers! It's like their form of twisted entertainment. Which get worst with age. Then they claim they didn't do/say anything!! I'm not even kidding when I say the whole family is a pit of vipers.

Absolutely toxic! Glad to be free but now we have to navigate his mother, who is another kind of crazy... we're definitely NOT going through this again to take care of her!!! We need a break!

Spot on! My raging narc mom would tell the tallest, emotional tales, some true, but for additional effect, she would imitate people, sometimes at their worst. So embarrassing. She would demonstrate my Uncle having a stroke, etc. Pure demonic. Who does this?
