Those stripes could save an aircraft in the air and make it a target on the ground. As operations moved into France, upper-surface stripes were removed to restore camouflage, while markings underneath remained for recognition. The same aircraft needed to be conspicuous to friendly gunners below and inconspicuous to enemy aircraft above. It鈥檚 these practical compromises that send me exploring old infrastructure and forgotten places for my channel. A photograph with only half the stripes tells you something about changing priorities. Survival depended on being recognised by the right people and overlooked by everyone else!
