The narcissism of these people is astounding. The mansions are beautiful, though, and Newport is a feast for the eyes. I live in RI and visit every summer and sometimes off season when it's less crowded. It never gets old. ❤

The real tragedy lies in the timing: Ogden Goelet died just five years after its completion

Geeze, I wish my only worry was building a home, planning parties and keeping up with the Joneses.

The tragedy is that people can get this trivial and self-consumed.

I have been to both of these incredible homes, but I will say this:  the Breakers was far more spectacular. I really doubt that the Vanderbilts were in any way humiliated. I’ve also been to Marble house. The Breakers is far larger than Mable House.

A real tour instead of photos and drone video would have caused me to watch this all the way through

"Only one house in Newport surpassed Ochre Court in size: The Breakers."  This is incorrect. Marble House is actually 2,100 square feet larger than The Breakers.

The production of the vision images is so bad in terms of having any connections to the history being spoken. We see images with no notes on what the images are. Many are decades wrong and have nothing to do with Ochre Court, ie. the image of the steel workers eating lunch on the steel beam. Why was the Woolworth mausoleum shown, what did it have to do with the Ochre Court or the family, nothing, absolutely nothing. I enjoy the history but why isn't a better job done with the film? I call it lazy and poor production.

I can't help but feel that these ultra wealthy early Americans were "supposed to" (destined, planned for) fund an economy to provide for all and spent it in this way instead, prompting the Lord to take away what He had provided to support even the workers. The Bible men of old, the Old Testament "heros" would build an altar to the Lord and worship Him there after He had provided for them. These men built altars to themselves and worshipped each other's fortunes instead. So God took it away from most of them, frequently through early death. Whew.
