Stuyvesant Fish was a direct descendant of Peter Stuyvesant, the last colonial governor of New Netherland, and rose to become President of the Illinois Central Railroad — one of the most powerful businessmen in the United States during the railroad age, and a close personal and business associate of J. P. Morgan. In 1898, the Fishes purchased a parcel of land on Ocean Drive in Newport — the unfashionable side of the resort, deliberately chosen by Mamie as a calculated rejection of Bellevue Avenue, where the Vanderbilts, Astors, and Belmonts had built the marble palaces that defined American Gilded Age architecture. They commissioned a 40-room Colonial Revival mansion designed by Dudley Newton, completed in 1898 at a cost of approximately $100,000 — and named it Crossways for the way the breezes from Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic crossed over the site. Mamie's first major Crossways event in 1898 set the tone for everything that followed — a "Mother Goose Ball" at which Newport's most aristocratic guests were required to dress as nursery-rhyme characters, including J. P. Morgan, who reportedly appeared as Old King Cole. In 1902, she staged the dinner for the visiting "Prince del Drago of Corsica" — a mysterious European titled guest whom Newport's finest anticipated with the earnest reverence the resort reserved for real nobility — and when the prince was revealed as a dressed-up monkey introduced by Joseph Leiter with mock court ceremony, the room's outrage was immediately overwhelmed by helpless laughter. Mamie's social system rested on a single devastating principle that replaced the entire Astor operating model: you were welcome at Crossways not because you could endure a three-hour dinner with grace, but because you could appreciate a primate in evening dress.
