  My wife and I have toured all of the Newport mansions and Biltmore. The craftsmanship is absolutely stunning and breathtaking. Some of the rooms exhibit extreme extravagance.

  They got rich by forcing people to work 12 hour days, no paid time off, no worker’s compensation, no health insurance, no pay increases. The worker was simply a warm body to be replaced by the next. I challenge the notion that we’re business geniuses. They were simply greedy men, who knew how to work the system to their benefit.

  AS others have commented too, the HBO series The Gilded Age, &nbsp;is remarkably historically accurate in framing the stories. BTW: Season 4 starts on November 1, 2026.

  To all those who are critics of the money spent and builders&apos; working conditions-I challenge you to find better working conditions in the towns from where these new immigrants came. For every dollar spent building these mansions, someone was thrilled to have a job and feed their family. The money reported on the expenses didn&apos;t go into thin air, it went to employ people who were thrilled to have a job, were proud of their work (especially the extremely talented craftsman) and supported businesses. If these millionaires stuffed their money under the mattress, I would criticize them. However, for every party thrown, local businesses supporting the events thrived. Local economies benefited. My daughter owns a bakery and her income depends on parties such as these. Try looking at the cup half full rather than expecting people to provide benefits that didn&apos;t exist anywhere in the time they lived.

  It is sad that these beautiful mansions were torn down to make way for ugly skyscrapers. Such a shame. They could have been turned into private schools, libraries, institutions, and perhaps hotels or great inns or museums.
